Swimoutlet has a lot of other reasonably priced suits, in both kid and adult sizes, that might work.

Where does she buy her clothing?

If you have Amazon Prime, they have an awesome selection of swimsuits. My DD has very narrow shoulders and is also tall and thin. This brand worked well for her in a 1 piece, so I'm not sure if the bottom would be small enough for your DD.

Or try this brand:

I found awesome swimsuits at Dick's, Sports Authority, REI, etc. but they were all quite pricey. I'm not sure if there is anywhere besides Lands End that sells tops and bottoms separately, and theirs look more little girl to me.

Nordstrom children's section has some cute, mature 2-pieces. My 9 yo is begging for one.

Amazon has free returns too (double check item you select is eligible)

A 6th grader does not need to worry about having a woman's style bathing suit to attract 'rising middle school' boys...

Thanks for all the links!

She and I spent close to two hours on the Lands End site yesterday lookingvat swimsuits and she deemed everything too litlle girlish.

I totally blanked on H&M and we'll definitely plan on visiting the store this weekend.

I had no idea about Swim Outlet - thank you for those links!

DD is really looking to fit in more with what The Girls are wearing. I found a two piece suit at Athleta and have ordered a tankini top/bikini bottom for her to try. I may stop by Dicks or REI to see if I can find options. She likes to kayak so perhaps we can get some greater use out of a two piece actuve suit.

As to where she buys clothes - pants are from American Eagle and Gap (super slim) and shirts are from Forever 21, American Eagle, Aeropostale and Nordstrom.

How about H&M in the girls' department? Their girls' clothes are usually more fashionable than little-girly.

I have a very tall 5th grader (5'5") who no longer fits in kids clothes, but many of the junior styles are too mature for her. Someone suggested dELiAs - we just placed an order so I can't speak to how it will work out, but thought I would share.

We're having the same problem. 12 year olds who can't fill out a juniors size top have few swimsuit options.

Tankinis - she can pick top and bottom separately.

Id you try Abercrombie Kids? They have tiny suits but they may be too teeny bikini-ish.

OP here -- thanks to the PPs for additional suggestions!

I looked at the online size chart for Garnet Hill (and DD really dislikes all the suits there, but I am now getting desperate) and there's nothing near her waist size. A waist size of 20.5 inches is a kids size 3 -- as in 3 years of age.

Thanks to the PP for the Delias link -- I saw a couple of cute suits but the smallest waist is 23 inches. She'll swim right out of the modestly cut boy shorts.

Abercrombie Kids is very teeny bikini plus the waist is too big for her.

The Athleta order arrives tomorrow (thank you, FedEx tracking!) so I'll try more online searches after she tries on the suit. (We picked out the Dive In Medley Tankini top and bottom, in case others are struggling like we are.)

Thanks so much for all the help!

Have you looked at Lands End's Canvas website? That's their trendier JCrew-like line. Just click on "Canvas" logo from the LE homepage
