DD is too young to have applied this year but some of my friends' children, who are white or Asian, didn't get in to HGCs and they are saying that their children's scores were much higher than the mean for their particular school. I'm wondering if there is some legitimate concern here or whether they are just upset their children didn't get in and are reaching for whatever explanation they can.
Wondering if MCPS has released information about the average test scores of admitted students by race? |
I didn't know the scores of admitted students were made available. Where is this published?
Also, I would guess that decisions are not made based on scores alone, since they also take teacher recommendations, parent statements, etc. |
I haven't seen official scores from the county but I believe people got information in their acceptance letters.

My guess is that some parents are dealing with massive sour grapes. |
I do not believe that is true. |
I would doubt that it is... If that quotas were used the population of the programs would not look like they do. |
As a PP has said, test scores are not the only criterion for admission. Also, the vast majority of students at my child's HGC are white or Asian. |
Our center is close to white minority with Asian and Indian being very well represented. |
White privilege and sour grapes-- an ugly mix. |
Ask your friends to appeal. They should be able to get all the information as to why their kids were not accepted. My guess is.. bad teacher rec. No race preference involved period. |
Really given the racial makeup of these schools they seriously think their chances were dashed by the small amount of AA or Hispanic kids that got in? Sigh |
Were their scores higher than the mean for the HGC, or for all of the kids at their base school who were applying? The latter wouldn't necessarily qualify them fr HGC entry. |
My daughter's center is the same. |
Ours is nearly all white. Different parts of the county have different populations who apply and are qualified.
Agree with others. There are a number of factors that are considered. |
