Big Law Attorney Turned Law Clerk?

Anonymous
So I left big law 5 years ago. I have had some hourly work until about 6 months ago that kept my busy 10 hours a week or so. I am considering looking for a more regular part-time work next Fall. I really only want to work 15-20 hours per week. I want to work in Montgomery County but don't have MD bar. I am considering applying for law clerk positions in the fall. I think it would suit me perfectly-- part-time work using my training. Have any experienced attorneys out there found arrangements like this? $ is not the driving issue for me here. I want to re-enter the legal market in a way that doesn't destroy my family life. DH works long hours and I am (and enjoy being) the school pick-up/homework/carpool driver every evening.

Do you mean Clerk of the Court type positions? Are those PT?

OP, it would help if you would define "law clerk." Law clerk for a judge? Another term for paralegal/research clerk?

I think she means doing the type of legal work done by law students. More legal than paralegal, but not actually practicing. My impression is that these positions are basically for law students, not lawyers, and that most places don't try to fill a long-term niche with a lawyer. On the other hand, far be it from me to judge the bottom dwellers out there who want an attorney for a law student price. Good luck to you OP!

I want to be a summer associate for life without ever becoming an associate. Please tell me how to do that.

Obviously the prior posters are not lawyers. Many federal judges have career law clerks at the same time they have first year lawyers. Likely county judges do too. I think it might be hard to get. A friend was a career law clerk for a federal court of appeals for several years. Good luck.

I took a research/writing position in a small office that is basically a law clerk position. It's 20 hours a week and the pay is decent. I'm keeping my hand in as an attorney and being a mom and taking some classes. Love it!

Addiing: I found this position through net-working. I knew a lawyer who knew a lawyer who was looking for someone.

Look on Craigslist daily for small/solo firms looking for a part-time attorney. Like this one (but in VA, sorry):

But unlike this one, which is expressly geared towards SAHM/Ds, law firm may not be all that likely to hire a former biglaw attorney as a clerk bc they would be afraid of you jumping ship for a better position.

I am a pp. Yes, they do. But they are not part time. They are good jobs though.

a judge is not going to want a 15-20 hr./week clerk, those are/can be demanding positions unless you're in a state court with a mediocre judge and not a lot of action.

OP- here. Yes, this is what I meant, not for a Judge. I will starting my networking effort and hope to find something by next fall. I will also keep an eye on Craigslist. PP--if you don't mind me asking, what kind of $ should I aim for? Is $100/hour way too much for this kind of work?

? wow. yes, because all state court judges are mediocre. and having clerked in a state court, I can tell you we saw a ton of "action" - from murder trials to contract disputes. wouldnt trade the experience for the world. don't know about a part time schedule though. my official hrs were 37.5 a week, but if we had a jury out, motions ran long, whatever, id certainly be expected to stay late and leave only when my judge left.
