Tell me about Twinbrook Elementary

Anonymous
Is it really as bad as the test scores suggest? It seems to feed into good middle/high schools but performs much worse than other neighboring elementary schools. Just trying to figure out why there's a Title I school in that part of the county, the neighborhoods seem fine? What am I missing?

Twinbrook has always been a rough area. Some of the homes are now rentals and immigrants are occupying many of them. You may not hear English spoken if you take a walk through the community.

PP, what is your personal experience with Twinbrook ES?

I'm asking because, based on your report about the neighborhood, which is apparently (and "always" has been) a "rough area" (don't know exactly what that means, but it must be bad) and includes some people who are renters (yikes!) and immigrants (yikes!) and may speak to each other in languages other than English (yikes!), it doesn't sound to me like you have much.

When we were looking at houses a couple years back we visited a couple in neighborhoods that fed into Twinbrook ES. Maybe we weren't in the "rough" part of Twinbrook as the streets were perfectly nice and kept-up well. It was diverse, yes, but English was certainly spoken, lol. Ultimately we chose somewhere else (partly because I was a bit nervous about the ES like the OP) but it did leave us scratching our heads a bit.

I'm hoping someone here will really have an answer to this question - because we have also wondered. I really like what I hear about the MS and HS.

OP, could you ask for a tour? Or talk to some people on the Twinbrook PTA? This might be more useful than input from anonymous commenters.

I think the Title I status is largely due to the apartment complexes on the south side of Twinbrook Parkway that feed into Twinbrook ES.

This thread might be helpful. For some reason it doesn't come up when you search this forum for "Twinbrook".

Here is the info about the school. Look at test scores, farms, ESOL, population, capicity.

Twinbook is the "problem" elementary school of MS and HS.

It's interesting that Viers Mill elementary has pretty similar demographics in terms of farms and esol, but much better test scores.

Where does it say that?

The answer was given. The Twinbrook neighborhood feeds into Twinbrook Elementary. Going back 30-40 years Twinbrook has always been a problem neighborhood with less than desirable families. I didn't say every family is not desirable. Some are. Now there is some gang activity.

Is that not politically correct to say? Tough luck. Its true.

PP, do you live in Twinbrook? Do you work at Twinbrook ES? Do you have a child at Twinbrook ES? What information do you base your statement on?

(If you are the PP at 15:10, somebody has already asked you this question, but you haven't answered it.)

I have extensive experience dealing with the people who live in Twinbrook. I've lived in this county my entire life. Long enough to know neighborhoods, areas of the county, and the schools.

In other words, you don't live in Twinbrook, you've never lived in Twinbrook, and you've never dealt directly with Twinbrook ES. Yes?

Well, I can't yet speak for the schools since my kid is still a toddler. But I can speak for the neighborhood since I live there. My family and I moved in last year in August and absolutely love living in Twinbrook! The people are friendly and very welcoming. Yes, it's very diverse and there are a lot of immigrant families. But they seem to want the same things that we want, a safe place for their kids to grow up and a nice family friendly environment. I've asked others in the neighborhood about the schools and overall, they seem very pleased. No, this is not Bethesda or Chevy Chase. But it's a nice area and I'm very happy and comfortable here!
