What multivitamin do you take??

Anonymous
I am in my mid 30s, female and never take vitamins. I was just diagnost with being anemic so now I am taking Iron. But feel like I should start taking some type of multi vitamin, I'm hoping this will help to avoid getting colds so often.

Just wondering what others have researched to be a good multivitamin.

70% of Americans are vitamin D deficient. Did you get tested for that?

I take a generic multivitamin with iron every other day.

I take 1,000 iu of Vitamin D per day (had low levels).

I used to take calcium, but read they gave been linked to increased risk of heart disease. So I stopped those. I probably only get two servings of dairy a day.

I take two fish oil pills every day for omega 3.

Oh, and drinking kefir can really boost your immunity. It's a bit more sour than yogurt, but it's so good for you.

THank you for the good info. Is kefir good for toddlers too? Im really into making them vegetable and fruit smoothies and they love it. I would be up to adding more vitamins if possible

My kids have loved Lifeway's probug milk for years. The have the same kefir in larger, cheaper bottles, but of course, the kids still love the "bug" milk.

I know this discussion is 6+ month old, but I ran across it on a Google search.

No, most multi-vitamins only offer 400 IUs of Vitamin D, which is 100% of the RDA, but the RDA is outdated. 2,000 IUs daily is what most experts are now recommending as a minimum RDA.

If you live south of the Mason/Dixon line and/or sunbath/tan w/o sunscreen regularly, that maybe sufficient... our skin produces D3 but most of us don't get enough sun and/or block the sun we do get with sunscreens. If you are dark skinned your skin produces Vitamin D less readily and you're far more likely to be deficient of Vitamin D.

For the woman who is taking 1,000 IUs of D3 because she's low, it's doubtful that amount will bump up her levels significantly.

I bumped up my levels from 17 to 80 by taking 20,000 IUs daily for a year, I had my levels checked quarterly. I now take 6,000 IUs daily to maintain my Vitamin D level at 80.

The formula I've seen, for maintenance, is 1,000 IUs x 25#s of body weight, I weigh 150#s.

Read Amazon reviews for D3 in the 5,000 & 10,000 doses to get a feel for the quantities people are taking to boost & maintain their Vitamin D levels.

What has been the impact of boosting your Vitamin D intake to those levels?

Don't take that much vitamin D without consulting with doctor.

I really like Rainbow Light Women's One and New Chapter Every Woman One Daily. Both are food based which for me means that they don't make me nauseous. I like that the vitamin A in New Chapter is 100% beta carotene and has folate instead of folic acid. However Rainbow light is MUCH cheaper so I stick with those.

PP here - so sorry for the double post. I also take an omega three pill from trader joes once a day.

Re the vitamin D - I was found to be vitamin D deficient too. I think its because I move to the suburbs so I don't get as much sunlight (I used to walk to work before) and now I drive. So my doctor prescribed a vitamin D pill which I'm taking once a week for three months.

my dr gave me a rx for 50,000 IUs that I take once a week for four weeks and recheck levels after that also 6 b12 once a week and retest. I don't know if it will help but can't hurt.
