I do not inderstand where people are coming up with 45 minutes?!! I travel back and forth from these places all the time.

I think they are saying 45 minutes with multiple stops

Then some folks are rounding up to an hour to justify their proposal to have low income kids travel to centralized bus stops to get to Whitman (it's okay because would be their "choice")

buses also go slower than cars, and are not going on direct routes because they are picking up multiple kids. it's definitely longer than a car ride (which others have suggested might indeed by 45 min itself).
any trip might be 45 minutes with unusually bad traffic. It does not take 45 minutes to get from Chevy Chase to Blair on a normal morning, that's absurd.

in a car. granted 45 min by car is slow.

in a school bus, 45 min seems correct.

on a bus with multiple stops and not using 495 it's easily 45 minutes. Blair isn't quite in dtss.

+1

And it's not necessary. CC is the CC is B-CC. B-CC is walkable for those in CC.

I'll buy that the school bus trip is 45 minutes, not 65 minutes as some are demanding low income kids do if they care about their futures

the Whitman suggestion arose because involuntary busing won't equalize FARMS rates because people will segregate (because they always do). the question became how can you increase the FARMS rate at Whitman, given it is so far away, without involuntary busing. the suggestion was to allow kids to voluntarily lottery in. the challenge is of course the length of the bus ride.

Why are you making proposals that only impact kids in other communities? Maybe stfu with your paternalistic bs

yikes why don't you care about poor kids' education?

I do. This proposal is not practical and will harm both the kids that get bussed and the kids who can't swing the commute, which would be significantly longer than any commute proposed in Option 3.

Yes, we went over this multiple times. Jfc

DCUM constantly babbles on about having strong cohorts then they propose busing the half of the strong cohorts away from low income schools and leaving the rest behind

ok then what proposal that does not involve involutarily busing kids 45 min will increase the FARMS rate at Whitman?

totally agree that it would be best to improve neighborhood schools in low income areas.

I don't care about increasing the farms rate at Whitman. People who live there chose it willingly. I would love to decrease the farms rates at DCC schools but that's not going to happen in any significant way, so I definitely don't want to bus half of the most academically inclined kids out of the DCC.

Or more. Which is the reason we declined CES. It's smoke and mirrors

Why not create a true magnet school within Whitman, rather than just (voluntarily) bus kids there based on FARMS?

That way you would boost Whitman’s FARMS rate while also increasing the odds that the newfound diversity at the school won’t come with the potential attendant behavior problems and culture clash?

Because I can assure you that many Whitman families have enough money to jump to private school if they feel the quality of the school is being eroded. Then it will be a downward spiral academically and the question for the families who are sending their kids to Whitman via long, voluntary bus rides will be, what was the point?

Wow, just when I was thinking I had seen the very worst idea. They just keep getting worse.

Focus everyone. It's modified Option 4 as proposed by RM parent. That's the best option for all of our schools. Perfect? No. Big improvement from the current options? Yes.

Just wait until you see what the school board does.

Both are the same amount of time. If kids miss the bus, how do they get to school?

Whitman aready has tons of advanced classes. The magnets are put at schools to boost their test scores. But what we found is the smart kids go to the speciality or magnet programs which does not leave enough smart kids at the home schools to offer the advanced classes which lowers test scores as well.

They aren't going to do this. I agree, the school board has many faults. But I see a ton of terrible ideas here that are worse than anything they would do.
