And yet eric garner died selling single cigarettes. "These people" ? You're disgusting. Police can and do overreact (yes, even in NYC) ALL THE TIME. They wouldn't be reacting to the BIKE, they'd be reacting to the "poor delicate overworked white lady" who "rightfully got" the bike. Please.

Are you actually mocking a visibly pregnant woman who's just come off a 12-hour shift as a "poor delicate overworked white lady"? You can't have children of your own.

And how, exactly, is her "whiteness" relevant? You added that to racialize it. You're gross.

NO I was mocking the PP who called her overworked.

But OF COURSE IT'S RACIALIZED. Me mentioning her race didn't make it so. It EXISTS. White women cry and get black men killed.

And there it is. ANY white woman who cries in public--even after coming off a 12-hour shift while pregnant just to be mocked by a gang of guys hoarding the last e-bike--must be trying to get black men killed. There was no acceptable response for her, only to quietly back down and either take one of the non-electric bikes or walk home.

Do you know what I think you are?

It was not a "gang of guys" --- nice dog whistle, by the way. It was a couple of KIDS. And YES - of course the acceptable adult response would be to take a non electric bike. Why is it the children who are supposed to be more mature than the adult? Because you all baby white woman and vilify black children, calling them a gang.

Why did he have to give up a bike he was already using??

TF. Are you listening to yourself? He's 17 about to graduate from high school, so he's almost 18. Not a "child" by anyone's definition. He's been scamming Citibike all day, including hoarding this bike for 50 minutes at the same station without actually using it himself and abusing the Angel Bikes program. He and his friends loudly mock the PA and called her baby r****d. He and his friends filmed her and put the video online.

And you think he's a poor widdle child with zero agency. And that the pregnant woman should take the regular bike--have you ever been pregnant?

He wasn't using it. He had it in the dock as part of a two-pronged scam to 1. reset the 45-minute free period, and 2. scam Citibike's Angel Bikes program. He didn't use it for a full 50 minutes at that station--as soon as she left, he redocked it (after 6 minutes) and didn't re-rent it and leave the station for another 20 minutes.

Well, the WHOLE POINT of the “bike angel”
program is to incentivize people to “rebalance” the Citibike system by riding bikes from full docks to empty docks … to *make them available to other riders.* So the kids were scamming the Bike Angel program by taking bikes from dock to dock, but refusing to let anyone else use them.

https://citibikenyc.com/bike-angels

OK, I'm totally on board with how they were scamming Citibike by redocking (for 50 minutes no less, according to his receipts) to reset the free ride. But from reading that, it looks like you get points for every ride, not for miles covered. So in theory he could use his account on a different bike for the next leg of the trip, and this just looks like a case of wanting the e-bike and not wanting to give it to the pregnant woman. Or am I missing something?

Anyway, if they were on the reduced Annual Fare program (https://help.citibikenyc.com/hc/en-us/articles/360032367371-What-if-I-keep-a-bike-out-too-long-) because the family was on other government aid, Citibike might have reason to be annoyed they were using it to hoard bikes.

There are a lot of possible permutations. But if they were just docking the bikes there to get Bike Angel points, refusing to let anyone else use them, then taking them out again (either to ride or get more points) that’s pretty crappy behavior.

That program is to move the bikes around so others can have them where they are at. They were scamming the bike company by not paying for longer rides.

White boys who are 17 are ROUTINELY called boys while black kids are held to a different standard. And while they may have been behaving immaturely, that doesn't make it ok for an adult to cry and call the cops because they were mean to her.

And yes, I have been a tired pregnant white woman three times but it never occurred to me to cry and call the police on children who were acting dumb. But then, I am not a racist.

They are not a gang. They are bored teenagers cruising around the city for cheap entertainment. He was not paying for or renting the bike when she rented it. He determined it was his and he was holding it for when he was ready to use it again. So, she choose to rent it, which she could do as he was not. Both are kinda wrong but he should have offered the bike and looked for another if he was really doing that bike program.

Wait, a few pages ago we were racist for calling them “boys.”

Anyway they were not just acting dumb. They surrounded her, filmed her, taunted her, AND physically pushed her bike into the dock. It is not racist to cry.

She did NOT call the cops. Go back and rewatch the video, or maybe you just made that up. She called for help after several of the guys forcibly redocked the bike while she was sitting on it, which would upset you too.

They sure AF aren't "children" if they're about to graduate from high school. Stop with that nonsense already.

You are a racist--against white women like yourself.

The police in any major city wouldn’t get involved. They don’t get involved when people are assaulted on public transit and when people are openly using and selling drugs and running out of stores with bags full of stolen merchandise - why would they, presumably, beat up someone over a disputed rental bike? These people want to be victims sooooo bad.

I'm not the pp you quoted but this last line is ridiculous.
Yes, I've been pregnant-many times in fact. I'm also a cyclist, I've done several century (100+ miles) rides on hilly terrain and countless shorter distance rides.
NYC is pretty flat and shouldn't be much of an effort to bike for anyone in reasonable shape. Yes, even a pregnant woman--I've known many pregnant amateur athletes who cycle long distance.
Still I personally would not bike in NYC while pregnant--not because of the effort/exertion but because I'd worry about being hit by a car, or something/someone causing me to fall from the bike. Those concerns are not any different in an e-bike vs. a regular pedal bike.

She didn't call the cops!!! Where are you getting this? Hasn't this been explained to death?

Those boys brought the media and attention on themselves. They recorded it and posted it. She left it alone, did nothing and went home. That was the end of it. Someone doubtful it was the boy in the video posted it and the media was looking for a new thing to dramatize and that is how this got blown out of proportion. He gets to live his life as normal. She loses her job and gets death threats. I doubt the boys thought through the consequences it would have on her when one made the choice to post it. But, actions have consequences on both sides.

Good for you. Did you do those century rides while pregnant and after coming off a 12-hour shift on a job that keeps you on your feet?
