The New York Times: Black NoVa Girl Says White Private School Classmates Cut Her Dreadlocks

Anonymous

For those outraged about the headline juxtaposition, this is the very *first* paragraph of the recanting story (emphasis added):

The police in Northern Virginia are investigating a report by a black 12-year-old girl that three white boys in her grade held her down, covered her mouth and cut off lengths of her dreadlocks on a playground at their private Christian school.

Not really hidden about that.

Bologna. Everyone know the difference between a headline and the text. If race made the story more important to justify it being in the headline, then when the story turned out to be false and the race was omitted the implication is that the race was not relevant. Of course it was relevant. The story got more attention because of the racial allegation and therefore a false racial allegation deserves just as much attention.

Life long liberal and Democrat fed up with the left manipulating their media as much as the right has with Fox -- arguably worse. Fox news has criticized Trump lately, only Fox talking heads protect him. The NY Times and Washington Post news desks used to be above that -- so disappointing.

Must have been quite the weekend deciding what to do once the investigators/police called BS.

If the police planned to charge the boys with something, they should charge her instead. How scary for those boys that they could have been charged and sent to away for a false report. She and her family should equally be held accountable by the authorities including wasting their time.

The boys would have been charged with assault and a hate crime. She should be charged with a hate crime given she targeted three boys who were white and were clear it was they were white. That is also a hate crime.

She’s a girl. Why wouldn’t they allow her to have long hair?

But yes, there should be no rush to judgment. At this point, it is an allegation by a girl whose family has chosen to put her in front of TV cameras. We'll see how it evolves.

I haven't been on this thread or followed this story for several days, but glad I held my powder above from the start. It was suspicious from the start for many of the reasons posted above and for others. The truth is that the media used to be very careful about reporting crime -- always referring to "alleged perpetrators" even when they had eyewitnesses. Now with no witnesses and just an alleged victim -- before there is any investigation at all -- the media is wiling to sensationalize and assume guilt until proven innocent - especially if they can play up a race or gender element. This is one of the by-products of the me too movement having gone too far. If any claimed victim is "presumed" to be telling the truth, by definition her accused is "presumed guilty" in the court of public opinion I'm not arguing that there aren't horrible people -- men overwhelmingly -- that assault women and girls all too often and have gotten away with it for far too long. There are and they have. But I am arguing that as a society we have to decide whether an uncorroborated allegation alone will be sufficient to take down a potentially innocent person in the court of public opinion -- be expelled from school, fired from a job, and land in the center of calls for condemnation amplified by careless journalism. I am sure that there are far fewer false allegations that truthful ones, but I suspect as people discover that they have a new-found power to bring down someone with an uncorroborated allegation, there numbers of false ones will increase. Unfortunately, several of these incidents that have received the most media attention have proven to be false, but the media keeps rushing for a story and the public is keeps eating it up without regard for evidence.

There was a bonus aspect of this story that got it national coverage..... That Karen Pence, our First Lady, teaches there was something nearly every media organization played up. Anything to attempt to bring negative attention to this administration. Even though Karen Pence was never really part of the story.

This reflects the sickness of identity politics and the cult of victimhood.

Oh, the irony.

Please don’t bring MAGA or politics into this.

I'm seeing comments written elsewhere that she was on WUSA 9 news yesterday morning and presented with a lot of gifts from an anti bullying group? I've tried looking at WUSA's website but they've apparently edited and scrubbed it all with "due to her age, we are no longer identifying her and her family" type of statements.

Does anyone know anything more about exactly what type of gifts these were?

Hate to break it to you, but the fact that every media group that reported on this led with "This is the school that Karen Pence teaches at" already brought politics into it.

Right? And isn't Mikea Turner (the reporter that first reported this story) a close friend of the family?

I think WUSA should fire her. Irresponsible journalism.

+1

Do you know who's also guilty of a hate crime?

The reckless New York Times.

How low they have fallen.

In the original headline of the NYTimes, the race of the kids was in the headline. Guess what was omitted from the story today?

Original story was top of front page on washingtonpost.com. The hoax update? Buried in the local sub-section.

Wow.

Just ...... wow.

Agree.
Textbook case of racist hate crime attempt.
