Setting aside sexual assault (which I suppose wasn't on their radar), what about the regular injuries that often happen and the reputation gymnastic coaches have for pushing kids too hard? We have a handful of kids who play sports, and we never leave them unattended just in case they are injured (watching a kid carted off on a stretcher during LAX practice probably scared us into being present). I can't imagine shipping my kid off to some pressure cooker camp alone.

You have no idea what you would have done as a child. You're looking at the situation through an adult lens. I watched 20/20 last night and one of the women said that pain and discomfort was part of gymnastics. There were a lot of things about it she didn't enjoy and she trusted her doctor and coaches. These girls were taught to suck it up, work through it and don't complain or there would be another girl happy to take your place.

My sister trained with Dominique Dawes and was actually better than she was, but my parents pulled her out of gymnastics once they realized the craziness of the system. They pushed the kids too hard and had no concern for their wellbeing. They forced them to push through pain and injuries. Any normal parent who loved their child wouldn't let them pursue it at that level.

The fact that these girls suffered injuries and were forced to push through is a red flag. What's the point? Olympics? Who cares. Where are any of those gymnasts now? There's no real fortune that comes with it, and the fame is fleeting. But the lifelong chronic pain stays with you. And now there's the PTSD from sexual assault.

This Olympic scandal and the Hollywood scandals have underscored the failure of parents to equip their children to understand that it isn't okay for people to assault you. Is being an Olympic athlete or an actress worth being victimized? Your line of thinking points in that direction.

I think the parents played a role in all of this if their kids didn't feel comfortable telling them out of fear of disappointing them or being kicked off the team.

Again: what are you teaching your kids? That they can tell you anything, or that they need to go along with whatever their coach/casting agent says?

My adult daughter might just kick a pig like you in the balls if a perpetrator got near her.

This is all over the news - not sure what you think protesting would accomplish that isn't already happening. MSU and USAG are getting eviscerated in the press. No question the people involved (once it's determined who they are) and the institutions need to be accountable, but you can support the girls who endured this without taking it out on people who have nothing to do with this mess.

Yes, most stick with it for a college scholarship. But is that a legit reason to not tell your parents you are being sexually assaulted?

BTW, I know two girls who got full gymnastic scholarships to top schools, and neither went to the Karolyi camp. You don't need to send your kids off to a pressure cooker to get a scholarship.

I honestly don't understand this kind of thinking at all. It's almost like you're encouraging everyone to keep quiet and stick with the program.

Your parents sound really awesome and with it. Sadly, I think many these days are afraid to say “no” to their kids. Bring invited to the camps has been held up as some sort of honor. Hopefully that will change and kids can still excel in the sport if they wish without being subjected to those conditions.

But really, the only solution is to do away with Olympic gymnastics altogether, don’t you agree?
