Why are WASP so elite?

Simple vast majority of kids don’t want to go to tiny no name schools with no diversity in the woods of a freezing cold podunk state. Going South.

Right, the single digit acceptance rates (unlike anywhere in the South other than Duke) definitely supports your assertion.

Ignore stagnant or declining applications at Colgate, Hamilton, and Middlebury. Also google WSJ feature article on exodus of kids to SEC.

My kids Did.Not.Want. Southern schools each for different reasons. Girl did not want to be in Maga red states without access to women's health care. The boy wanted snow and skiing.

insecure parents who pissed away money becaue they couldnt get into an actual top school instead of a podunk unrecognizable sister of the poor school

Actually, I find the insecure people are the ones who went to State U because they didn’t know any better or couldn’t afford a private college.

I went to one of the SLACs repeatedly mentioned here and have never, for one minute, felt insecure about it but I sense insecurity and sometimes hostility from people who went to state schools.

I think they are both great options. My kid loves her SLAC and her bff loves her state school. Neither is insecure and they each admire the other.

+100 It’s the parents trying to make silly comparisons. Kids don’t care. My kid’s friend group is attending a mix of schools- state flagship, Ivy, medium privates, OOS flagships…they enjoy comparing notes and appreciate the variety of experiences out there.

I agree. My kids speak to their friends and almost everyone is happy with where they landed and they also all have complaints about their schools. They seem much more honest and balanced about their views than most people on DCUM.

The WSJ article was about middle of the road kids eastern kids starting to add southern schools into the mix. It was Clemson vs Rutgers or Buffalo. Has nothing to do with elite schools and the numbers are small.

DCUM is full of insecure losers who want to feel superior because of where their children go to school—or worse, where they went to school decades ago. No one actually thinks like this in the real world

I went to Pomona as a QuestBridge Scholar and it was a common consensus among all my QB LAC friends (essentially, all the top ranked schools are partners) that no one knew our undergraduate institution.

They might be considered elite in some circles, but most of our experiences with name recognition has been confusion or apathy overall. Yes, even for people from Williams and Swarthmore.

Why does that matter?

I am not sure what your point is, unless you are complaining (in which case you are ungrateful).

Very low diversity at the Maine, Vermont, and upstate NY LACs. Those schools have a problem and unfortunately those schools can’t relocate.

Thankfully, there are still places like Holy Cross in the Eden of Worcester, MA, where kids with a 27 ACT can still get a decent education.
