NP rural means a town under 35k people, which for much of the northeast, is everyone outside a major metropolitan area. not Iowa. there are sooo many STARS kids who live in Orange County NY for example and have parents who commute to NYC. I think it's a good initiative, but can be whitewashing in its own way. https://starscollegenetwork.org/?ref=amherststudent.com |
| I don't know anyone who's gotten into Amherst this year. Williams and Swarthmore, yes. |
All of these kids are academically gifted, every one of them. Any kid that scores 97% or above is pretty academically special except maybe for elite college admissions and here on DCUM where every child is 3 sigma (and goes to an Ivy) if you believe the posters. Athletics is what gets these kids to yes, but they were equally qualified and would be in the hunt in the general pool as well. |

not sure what you mean here, but there are plenty of high schools that require you to take a test to get in. At least that's part of the application process. so it's totally reasonable that some HSs have average SATs of 1500. but yes, hooked kids are equally qualified. true with URM, legacy, donors and athletes. would they get in without the hook? eh, unlikely because 1 out of every 20 kids get in. |
My comment had nothing to do with the HS that they mentioned. As you suggested it is surely a 'test in' school and all of the kids are academically gifted in the same manner as virtually the entire pool at a T25 school od top SLAC for the purposes of this discussion. The point is that es they got 'yes' because of their athletic hook but otherwise they would be in the exact same pool of highly qualified kids and have the typical chance of admission. In no way do they diminish the academic experience at one of these schools which is what an earlier poster implied. |
