You can either acknowledge that and try to be respectful.

Or not. You can choose instead to be like that crotchety old neighbor who still uses the r-word and n-word.

DP. Nice backdoor way of insulting the PP.

Who dictates when language evolves? Who decides whether something is respectful or not? Respect is a two-way street. If someone declines to use your preferred pronouns or terminology, then the respectful thing to do is respect their decision. You have no legal right to compel someone to speak.

If you can demand that someone use certain language, then they can demand you can't use certain language.

I never said otherwise.

Jeff decides for DCUM. Other social groups will decide for themselves. If you want to hang out with educated, compassionate people you may need to change your language. It’s your choice.

This is nothing new.

If you "never said otherwise," you certainly are now. So anyone who doesn't speak the way you do is "deplorable"?

Also, would you tell someone who is a devout Muslim that they need to change their language in order to be part of your "educated, compassionate society"? Or do you not respect their religious and societal beliefs? Diversity is our strength, but you don't seem to respect that people believe different than you. Instead of criticizing people's choice of language, try convincing them. Or maybe you're afraid that by engaging, they might convince you....

"If there be time to expose through discussion, the falsehoods and fallacies, to avert the evil by the processes of education, the remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence" - Justice Louis D. Brandeis.

This is why I generally don't allow discussion of transgender issues. What starts out as "I love trans people but I am concerned about unfair advantages in sports" becomes a demand to call transgender women "men". It is amazing how much support Muslims get when they are believed to be transphobic. But have them utter one word about Israel and I suddenly there is a lot less interest in more speech.

So, time to bring this discussion to a close.

It’s not ok for anyone to knowingly use hateful language. If the social norms have been explained multiple times (as they have been here) then it’s up to the individual to choose how they exist in that society. You can be respectful or not. It’s up to you.

Deplorables do seem to get off on being hateful and breaking social norms.
