All great options but I visited the College of Chemistry at Berkeley and it was something else. Just the fact that it has such a rich history and all the elements that were discovered there. The prestige of Harvard and Yale is obviously in a different league but College of Chemsitry at Berkeley is awe inspiring.

WM waitlist, NOVA this fall/ guaranteed spring admit. $42k
Indiana Kelley direct admit. $57k
Pitt Dietrich direct admit, no merit $55k.

Pitt, get good grades, transfer to UVA or William and Mary.

why would you have him pick almsot the most expensive option? Pick from JMU, USC, Indiana whichever felt best after visiting.

In case he can't transfer and is at Pitt...it is the best of the lot other than William and Mary.

Pitt is better than IU Kelley?

For undergrad, yes. I know a kid from the Gym there now at Pitt doing business. He got money but he turned down Gtown, GW, and W&M for it.

Pitt better than Kelley 😂

Dc is deciding between wm spring admit, JMU honors and South Carolina. Cost and distance is somewhat a factor so Indiana and Pitt are out. Does not want to have to transfer, even the spring admit thing is a hard pill to swallow. Wm not direct admit to business, but sc and JMU are, pretty much.

Kid is sporty and wants to go Greek. Not really interested in study abroad which is one of the fall options for wm spring admit. Which would you choose.

Would do S Carolina in that case.

If she really likes W&M, I’d go the January start. Otherwise, maybe Gettysburg.

I might do wm spring, then JMU, then Gettysburg.

Don't do JMU for poli sci - the department is a joke

Um, no it's not. I have had one Poli Sci major and one IR major graduate from JMU. Both were employed right out of college in their fields and have been moving up steadily. Highly recommend JMU.

I also had one graduate from there and from WM -- there is zero comparison between the levels of coursework and the quality of instruction they received.
JMU's upper division classes would have homework consisting of worksheets of vocabulary words and fill in the blank sentences - it was not college level work.

Kenyon at mid-60s annual coa.
St. Olaf at mid-40s coa
Wooster at mid-30s coa
Hendrix at 30-ish coa
Beloit at 30-ish coa.

Beloit, where I wish my kid had applied. Otherwise, Wooster.

Here's mine, for English major, focus on creative writing, also interested in fine arts.

Wooster
Allegheny
Washington College
Ursinus
Saint Mary's College of MD

Waitlisted: American

And meanwhile I wish my kid had applied to SMCM! (OOS, but I think it’s a very cool place and am not sure why more people don’t attend OOS.)

I think I’m with the PP who says SMCM or Wooster.

Did not get into Davidson.

Male, sporty but not a recruited athlete, social but prefers a small group of friends to a raging party, wants to study econ or poli sci followed by law or business school. Likes moderate weather and moderate politics. Money not the be-all-end-all, but the above list is in order of most to least expensive after merit and FA.

Delaware! But Elon deserves a second look; students tend to really enjoy their time there.

I agree. Elon gets high marks for student satisfaction and teaching quality. Gettysburg and Dickinson are strong choices, but increased cost is a factor and weather less appealing. Delaware could be a fun school, not sure if there’s a preference for smaller college (seems so from the list).

Wooster or st. Olaf. I don’t think Kenyon is worth the extra $, Beloit is tiny. Wooster has rep for learning differences. St Olaf has more artistic side, though in a more wholesome way.

Swarthmore or William and Mary assuming in state. Not Wesleyan.

+1 Swarthmore if funding is okay. WM or UVA if in-state--what kind of science?

Physics likely. Yes, in-state.

I think SMCM is cool too, but the lack of OOS people is my sticking point. I won't be unhappy if DC picks it, however. I did like Washington College a little more.

See you at Wooster, lol.
