What was over the top? Filming your kids soccer game? Or threatening to call the cops because you are filming your kids soccer game?

Having the whole set up for filming a rec game seems excessive but its a free country. I can't believe someone even complained about that.

Who knows? These rec coaches are egomaniacs. Filming games, threatening to call the cops, using travel players in rec tournaments. This crap just doesn't happen in travel.

Interesting board. We are hopefully switching from Valor at the end of the season for better coaching, my dc is on the 4th team in his age group and I did feel some ego blows reading through the comments about the low teams. It seems they have a hard time staffing coaches on the weaker teams and I dislike paying the same as a top team family for much worse coaching and practices.

just make sure they are getting a look in other clubs. Not much better if you are on 4th or 5th in another.

I've only seen it once... it was elementary aged kids, too. Some parents have too much time, money, vested interest in youth sports... everyone thought that team/coach was really weird. Older kids and travel, cool whatever. Rec kids? Why? Lol

Coach matters the most in my personal opinion. Look into who is coaching at the other clubs you check out. There are clubs who had staffing issues this year even at higher teams and lost players to really bad coaching mid year.

In our experience when the team moved up from 7v7 to 9v9 they pulled up from the white team. At tryouts there was only one external player that had tried out and the rest were existing kids. So they are definitely not bringing in new kids.

Funny how this thread about valor has exploded and the club sent out tryout registration emails this AM. I guess they want to see how many existing kids will be trying out this year. I think many are jumping ship.

That was my fear. Thank you for the heads up.

Tryout registration!? The season hasn't even started yet. Or barely. Its like you are paying for half a year.

You are talking about your experience with one particular team. Valid, but you can't universalize.

Any smart parent will quickly register for tryouts to stay flying under the radar for the spring season, and then shop around. People, register for tryouts even if you have no intention of returning next year. You don't want your kid to get no play time all spring b/c they think you are out the door.

I thought no one read this website or cared what anyone hear had to say.

I think every club is going to start to put up tryout ads and registration links now. ECNL and GA sessions are underway. We have not registered yet (though we will- DS is a happy kid at Valor with a coach who teaches the game and cares about the players), but I'm not going to be offended by the fact that the option is there already. In my son's age group there is plenty of movement between teams and people from outside absolutely attended tryouts and made all of the teams last year. My neighbor with a daughter is quite happy too. I told her about this thread and she was shocked. We both have younger players. You never know, but I would be surprised if anyone on our team is not returning.

quite the opposite. They do bring in. ton of new kids. If your kid is not guest playing occasionally then you can forget about a fair tryout for existing players.
