All the ridiculousness of Harvard admissions prior to this but NOW she will resign. The hypocrisy and cancel culture is horrifying.

What a difference 10 days makes. It looked like Claudine Gay might hang on at Harvard but how is that now possible? She’s been exposed as a serial plagiarist, moreover on a comparatively thin published body of scholarly work at that. She even plagiarized verbatim parts of one of her acknowledgements. She’s become a big embarrassment to Harvard. How can the university keep her on as president or even as a tenured faculty member after this? Just a few years ago, the University of South Carolina president had to resign after plagiarizing part of a graduation speech. The Harvard - Gay saga keeps getting worse.

I think it’s hilarious. This plagiarizing woke buffoon as the head of the most esteemed university . . . not. The gig is up. No one wants to hire the obnoxious litigious little weevils that come out of these places. This is the beginning of a bigger change.

11 "scholarly" publications to Gay's name and it appears at least half are plagiarized. Note to Harvard Corp trustees: when you're I a deep hole, stop digging.

We used to live in an America where people felt shame. But nobody has to pay anymore. CNN pundit exposes himself? Back on the air. President guilty of rape and "seducing" porn stars? No problem.

We should hope that this sorry saga marks the extreme high tide of Woke DEI.

Didn't Stanford's President resign due to plagiarism?

South Carolina and Stanford's president were white men. We're seeing different standards playing out in real time.

If we have Harvard holding President Gay to lower standards than its students, and the GOP holding the President Trump to lower standards than it voters... then what high standards can any of us espouse anymore?

<sigh>

Can't even go to church for moral authority. Pastor started calling President Trump an imperfect vessel. That was a step too far for me.

I can’t get past the fact she has only 11 papers. Publish or perish doesn’t seem to have applied to her.

Haven't read all the responses, but yes, you will absolutely see a decline in applications. I suspect of there is a legal way for current families to sue the schools for ruining their own reputations, they will. These names no longer produce awe. There is a funny political cartoon going around where the interviewer for a job says something like "you mention you went to college, but don't mention the name of the college...Is it Harvard?" Then the person being interviewed says something like "I'll see myself out."

Each president embarrassed herself and her institution, although the Harvard president was particularly noteworthy.

1) Harvard YES (doubled down on President Gay’s stupidity and her long rap sheet of plagiarism allegations)
2) MIT MAYBE
3) UPenn NO (president quickly resigned)

Harvard is twisting itself into a pretzel to provide the flimsiest justifications for Gay's "scholarship." A couple of weeks ago, enough faculty rallied to her, resenting pressure from donors and politicians to can her. More may be appalled now by her repeated plagiarism (not to mention her thin publication record) and Harvard's hypocrisy in excusing it. However, they may be afraid to stick their neck out because of the blowback if they criticise her. It seems that the Gay's symbolism matters more than her hollow substance.

Didn't the President of Stanford have to resign after plagiarism came out? How common is this?

I think Gay will go in the slow winter days btw xmas and new years. Not early enough to be Christmas table talk though. I say, Saturday, Dec 30th.

Will Harvard relax its plagiarism enforcement for students and other faculty SELECTIVELY as means to their ends? Will be interesting timescfor students defending plagiarism accusations.

This would be the right course for Harvard and for her. It’s hard to see how she remains there longterm as a tenured and chaired professor, but who knows ?

I'm afraid they are going to run everybody's doctoral thesis through ChatGPT or other AI and find more people.

There could be hundreds if not thousands of people. Some graduates will already be professors at other universities. Some will be NASA scientists. Some stay at home Moms. Etc.

Then Harvard will say to the world "We cleaned house. Your turn." And they will remain the top school for another 300 years.
