Why have people given up on looking attractive when they go out?

I'll never forget the day many years ago when I forgot to wear eye liner to work. Multiple people asked me "are you okay?" before I realized why.

I'm 60 years old and have worn eyeliner since I was 15. Every time I've tried to give up the habit, I've had at least one person a day say "Oh, you look exhausted today" or "Are you not feeling well?" So I guess it's eyeliner for life or until my eyesight is so bad the magnifying mirror doesn't work anymore or I develop a hand tremor.

This made me laugh. Which eye liner do you use?

I am 45 and feel like eye liner hasn’t really done much for me since I was in my 20s.

I'm 58. I just bit the bullet and let people get used to my new normal. I've also made it a point not to comment on people looking tired for the reason you illustrate. I don't want to discourage them from being comfortable looking as they look.

I'd rather the "you clean up great!" comment than the "are you feeling ok? You look sick/tired/etc" lol

still their problem.

It's just rude when a person dresses inappropriately. It also gives a negative impression of a person, that they don't care about themselves or that they don't care enough about the occasion or the people they're with to dress- up to the level of importance or significance of the event.
But, you don't care what people think about you, so wouldn't expect you to care enough about others to show them you respect them/the event they are hosting/etc.

a) It's not rude
b) you arent the boss of whats appropriate

Eye makeup can look so nice on other women but it makes me look dirty. My eyes are kind of deep-set, maybe that's it?
I just wear lip gloss. I wish I could wear eye shadow or something. It looks fun.

Not the PP you are responding to, but it's absolutely rude to dress inappropriately for an occasion.

You just need to wear a pearlescent cream/white/beige that suits your skin color. From lash line to brown one. Fluffy eyeshadow brush. + mascara. Easy!

Went to Italy for the first time this past summer, and OMG. I feel like Americans just don't have any self-respect anymore to look at them compared to the way the Italians carried themselves. It made me sad. Everyone is in Goblin Mode. I understand that sometimes life gets in the way, but try to put myself together and make sure my children do the same.

Yeah. There was one on my kids soccer team that would wear short tight bondage mini dresses with strappy stilletos to a mid day kids’ soccer game.

Eastern Europeans often look like hookers

Why have Americans stopped caring how they look when they leave their house. I grew up with a mom who refused to even garden outside without makeup and decent clothes on. She always said somebody could stop by and she didn't want to look like she just woke up. I could count on my two hands how many times I have seen her without makeup outside of her bedroom.

I am 40 and when my kids were really little did not put much effort into my clothes (leggings, sweatshirts, etc at the bus stop) but this year I decided I needed to step up my game. I wake up every morning, wash my face, put on real clothes (jeans and a nice top, a dress, etc) and put some make up on (nothing heavy just some blush and eye liner). I can't believe how much better I feel every day!

I haven’t. I am always color coordinated, with a nice pair of slacks, a pair of quality shoes and belt to match, a collared shirt, sports coat or jacket and a fedora typically

Lol! Her soccer field appearances were probably marketing time for her.

Agree that the way some Eastern Europeans dress can look so cheesy.

Of course everyone in the US is in goblin mode. People in Italy get a months vacation every year, plus health care, plus don't have to be worried about going bankrupt if they rack up medical bills or child care bills.

Of course we don't have any self respect if we are willing to put up with this sort of treatment.
