Why have people given up on looking attractive when they go out?

My parents always commented on how disgusting everyone at the airport is nowadays. People used to actually shower, look decent to fly. Now they stink and are in pjs, etc. He calls it 'the army of the great unwashed'.

Other people do not care how others perceive them outside of certain situations like work. I do not care whether some stranger on the grocery store thinks I am attractive or not. I care about getting to and from the store as easily as possible, taking up the least amount of my day.

Agree with this. I don't care how I look or how others think I look.

Same. My hygiene is good -- I'm clean and I smell nice -- but after that, I want to be comfortable. I dress appropriately, but I don't dress up if I don't have to.

When I was younger, I found fashion and grooming fun, and how I looked affected how I felt about myself. Now other things make me feel good about myself.

This is part of it. It's a frumpy crowd who doesn't care much about looks. Hit up Miami or LA and you'll see a higher percentage of people who at least avoided wearing stained clothing out that day.

DMV attracts homely lawyers. It’s law of percentages

A better question is, why did people care so much about this in the past? In a professional setting or at a nice event like a wedding, sure. But I don’t need to dress up for my neighbors & fellow airplane passengers. This is separate from hygiene. Of course people should shower, wear deodorant, etc.

Life was more formal then! I wouldn't go back to that for anything.

To be honest the experience of flying has been degraded to such an extent that it's now like riding the bus. I don't get dressed up for that.

I look great. I also don't care what others think about me. I'm not spending a dime on something that doesn't matter.

Enjoy the hole in your wallet from your vanity!
