I’ve lost count of how many bodycam videos I’ve seen of people screaming that they’re cooperating, often literally being crushed by the arms of weight of officers and yet they’re fatally injured or killed. “Hands up, don’t shoot!” can still get you killed. I support police in general and I don’t have the perfect solution, but giving up our constitutional rights is definitely not one of them. |
Those are interesting, and discouraging, stats. The number of gun fatalities in the region coincides with that time frame, and may be related. Historically, crime in Fairfax County is low and is mostly DV or internally gang related. This was neither. |
Yee, that could be what we see here. We'll find out. |
NP. Totally understand what you’re saying, and agree with you for the most part; however, this issue has gotten so out of hand at Tyson’s I don’t care about this guy’s rights. I care about the rights of upstanding citizens to shop and work safely at the mall. |
Everyone’s rights matter. I live near Tyson’s and I’ve stopped going there because last time I was there, I had to run from a stampede escaping what they thought was a shooter. It was the third such event in three months. It’s unfortunate, but Tyson’s is going to have to come up with a solution if they want to stay open. It’s my neighborhood and I understand your frustration but when you protect everyone else’s rights, you protect your own. Do not give up your rights out of fear. I remember running from police in rural Pennsylvania as a teenager attending a keg party. I was wrong, but I’m glad they didn’t have the right to shoot me. |
Exactly. |
Plenty of kids do dumb/illegal stuff, and plenty of adults do too. Generally, they live through it and learn and become better. But not everyone has multiple convictions of murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm, etc. Should he have been arrested peacefully and charged? Yes. Why did the police chase and shoot him? We'll find out soon. |
As a resident of Tysons corner, I'm happy we are taking a tough stance on crime. Keep that trash in DC. |
I'm the poster you're responding to. I'm not giving rights up out of fear. I believe we've all given up rights (the right to exists peacefully and safely in formerly decent areas) because we fear acknowledging common sense and fear being called racist. I've also run from keg parties. There is a huge difference between running from keg parties and being a hardened criminal that's regularly casing a department store and makes the decision to steal and then run from the police. He is one of many at Tyson's. You play a stupid game, you win a stupid prize. |
I went to Tyson's yesterday and honestly the vibe was SUS. This was a tragic outcome but we cannot have shoplifting and sketchy behavior at this mall or in the area. |
Agree. |
And yet you still have violence and shootings in NoVa. How can that be? |
“Can’t have sketchy behavior”
“Keep that trash in DC” Virginians being Virginians lol! |
Don't bother to compare statistics. It won't conform to your worldview. |
Fully agree. Let them know we don’t tolerate it over here |
