I learned a new tidbit today that they referred to the people who stormed the capital as an example of racists and in that discussion they must have referenced republicans because my son also asked why republicans are racist. This completed what my PK child got which is that all white bad, in particular old white people, are “bad men”

Yeah see this doesn’t seem like it was age appropriate. Like if really young kids are just taking away the message “white people are bad”….I don’t think that’s the message that helps. I am supportive of anti-racism education for kids, and learning about accurate history, but this seems like the presenter doesn’t have a clue how to do this in a pedagogically appropriate manner.

Which makes me think that this presenter was a poor choice on the part of Janney.

I wonder how much he cost.

DP: Many of the rioters are racists, but the event wasn’t a “race riot.” It was an offense against and betrayal of the majority of us. All of us non-participants were rightly upset about it.

Both the principals of Wilson and Janney referred to the riots in their subsequent emails as another violation against Black people, in the tradition of George Floyd, Travon Martin, etc.

I find that problematic because it overlooks the legitimate, appropriate feelings of big swaths of their students.

The rioters had confederate flags and antisemetic t shirts and signs. That is undeniably racist and antisemitic. And, the act was also an offense to all Americans. It’s possible to be multiple things at once.

I’m PP, and I agree. But this is what the principals of Janney and Wilson completely overlooked.

Yes, but they were also racists. They brought a gallows to the Capitol. They dressed in hateful t-shirts.

PP here. I think we’re splitting hairs but to be clear, racist and antisemtic rioters attacking the US capitol is itself an attack on all Americans. You don’t have to be Black or Jewish to be deeply offended.

Once more: Racism was a thread, but it was one of several. The people they wanted to ‘use’ the gallows for were Democratic leaders, mostly not Black. For many, a top concern was gun rights. Others had all sorts of other extreme, anti-democratic ideas.

Racism was part of it, but it was’t exclusively about racism, and even the racism wasn’t exclusively Black.

For school leaders to focus on the ‘victims’ of a single issue when multiple issues were at play was, well, a but self-absorbed. Lack of seeing the issues with clarity and perspective seems to be the problem behind the anti-racism assembly as well.

But you do have to be Black or Jewish to be fearful of your life. You also have to know racism and antisemitism starts from a very young age. It’s not like kids wake up one day and say or think hateful things, it’s learned.

I hope that the time and attention this assembly generated trickles over to concern over strengthening academics and ensuring that children falling behind from the disaster that is DCPS during Covid are helped.

THIS. I wish more time and attention were also paid to the social and emotional gaps students are experiencing rather than these concepts that are too over their heads

At Janney, half my kids teachers are Black. Their principal is Black. Their friends are Black. These are their role models, friends and peers. As far as I'm concerned, all this serves to do is other-ize the POC they love and look up to, assign guilt where none should exist on a child, and divide another American generation along lines of color.

Teach the history, teach the present, teach the truth. But this was seriously one of those times where I wish I lived in VA or something where an adult could feel safe even posing the question of, "do we really think this is the best use of students time and school funding? Is this appropriate?" But at Janney, you keep your mouth shut and your virtues signaled.

Your kid is freaked out about a one time anti-racism assembly. Imagine being a child that actually experiences racism. That is trauma.
Check your privilege.

Let's invalidate a kid's true feelings and play the, my suffering is greater than your suffering game. Said like a true anti-racist.

Agree.
