Visited in February one year and we actually really liked it. There's a certain coziness and wintriness about northern schools, but it isn't for everyone. I will say I would much rather prefer the cold and snow over hot and human any day of the week.

I don't like heat or people either

I have a rising senior at Northwestern. He was a RD admit. Just as a data point, in our experience Northwestern has been extremely generous with financial aid, covering everything above our EFC each year with grants, no loans. In all, we've paid just slightly more than we would have at our state flagship.

This is consistent with our experience as well. Almost point for point. Northwestern came out as our second cheapest option after state flagship, and aid actually increased for us every year. I know of certain schools that will provide a seemingly generous package up front, and then cut it dramatically as the years go on. I’m aware that UChicago does this, as does OSU, and I’m sure many other privates.

Ranked in the top 10 by Forbes, USNWR, and WSJ/THE…crossing our fingers and hoping for the best, but we are scared there’s going to be yet another increase in applicants.

Kid just submitted ED app, we are crossing fingers! He loves the school, already repping purple but trying to manage expectations. Best of luck to all other families applying this round !

DC has 3.95 UW/4.6 W GPA, 35 ACT (didn’t take SAT), and a couple of standard ECs (president of recycling/environmental club is most involved EC) but no other hooks. Most likely applying undecided. We are willing to go full pay, does anyone know if that would help?

Thank you, and best of luck to all. DC is just a little nervous because the ED acceptance rate at NU has shrunk by quite a bit and it’s been DC’s dream school for a long time. We are also looking at other options of course, but any other recommendations for target schools similar to Northwestern would be welcome.

I know a girl with similar stats and good activities who ED’d there and was rejected.

If that’s your daughters dream school, maybe ED’g there would be worth it.

If she could live with going to a less selective place, maybe she’d be better off being more risk averse and ED’g at a great but less selective school.

narrator: there will be

Especially since top students are now opting not to bother with the schools that have a 95% rejection rate for ED1, instead going straight to their ED2 or school like Northwestern that have always been strong, but "second choice" among a certain set of applicants. I think those days are over. There are just too many very strong applicants for too few seats across the board.

DP but the area is beautiful right now. We just got down from visiting family in Kenilworth right by NU campus, and it’s stunning. Fall looks good on Chicago!

Our DS just graduated and also was an ED applicant. If I recall, he heard mid-December? FWIW, nearly all of his friends at NU said they applied ED. It's an amazing school....Best of luck to all the kids waiting to hear!
