She'd check my pockets for treats.

Oh nooooeees, OP! You mean they didn't go running for help like the posters on the "What happened the the California Family" thread said they would? Lassie would have done it...

I’ve tried to fake incapacity with my dog and he ignores me. I have also walked him in my neighborhood and then closed my eyes to see if he would lead me home. He definitely knows which way is home and once he reaches the house, he will refuse to continue on. He pulls me right up the driveway.

Ha! That's what prompted me to try it with her.

What's really interesting to me is a lot of the YouTube vids show that dogs tend to protect and act defensively when their owners are home and someone breaks in.

My dog barks like crazy when someone comes to the door or a stranger comes in. Won’t bite but barks loudly.

I'll never forget when I fell down a flight of stairs and my dog stood there wagging her tail.

I was laying there in a heap at the bottom of the stairs thinking, "my dog clearly hates me" while she was probably thinking "mom is playing a fun new game!"

My Samoyed knows when we're not feeling well, and stays close to whoever is sick. But he's not going to bark to alert someone, or fetch somebody, if someone has a sudden accident - at least, he didn't when I tumbled down the entire length of the basement stairs with the laundry!

I’ve fallen down the stairs with laundry. Ouch!

My dog did not check on me.

Am I the only one who thinks this is really mean to do to dogs? I saw some woman pretend to die on Tik Tok to see what her dog would do, and it was really sad to see that do so worried. It's kind of awful. Stop doing it.

It's not cruel. Calm down.

Oh I'm calm. Would you do that to a toddler? No. It's not cool. In fact, it's jus stupid.

I had a Boston Terrier and one night around 2am, someone was at our front door trying to open it. My dog leapt off the foot of my bed barking ferociously and ran downstairs. He stood at the front door barking like crazy until the person left. What's funny is that he had a really loud, deep bark that made him sound like a much bigger dog. In reality, he was a little 20-lb meatball who liked to snuggle.

Based on that incident, I'd like to think my dog would've attacked the guy if he'd managed to get in, but who knows.

Agree with this. We don't give them enough credit for detecting our true feelings during a simulation.

That's a smart dog.

I follow someone on instagram who has a service dog for PTSD and severe psychiatric disassociations. She's training a new dog so she talks a lot about the process and how her dog knows when something is wrong with her. It seems to be all about the scent in her case. Her body producing cortisol or whatever other chemicals and hormones that she emits when having an attack (I'm not doing justice in describing this) are what alert her dog to distress.

Therefore, my unscientific assumption would be that dogs can tell when it's faked. Even untrained dogs can sense the lack of authentic change in your body.

Lol this is such a dumb standard for the treatment of dogs. A dog is not the same as a toddler.
