OP said they needed to move around for work. So many people did that last year. Did we all forget about COVID? |
| I don’t understand how showing them an empty box of heart worm meds proves anything. I’d switch vets or talk to a different tech. It’s possible the person you spoke with is new and didn’t fully understand the policy. |

Vet here.
(1) we require a negative HWT within 12 months of filling medication. No, i won't take your word for it. Sorry. Send me a copy of the results. It can be problematic to give a HW positive pet preventative. Incidentally, the test also tests for lyme, ehrlichia and anaplasma at most clinics. (2) YOU opted to go elsewhere for the test. If your relationship with them was so sacred, you would have made your appointment with them to begin with. I call BS on your doing it elsewhere because of "moving around so much". I think you wanted to save a buck. And now you are being called on it. I have some clients I will do ANYTHING for...because I trust them. I have some clients that I won't do anything for, because I don't trust them. The money you pay a vet isnt just for vaccines or meds....it is for their expertise and willingness to help you. You cut them out of that...deal with it. I like this quote - "If I do a job in 30 minutes it’s because I spent 10 years learning how to do that in 30 minutes. You owe me for the years, not the minutes." You owe your vet for the years...stop nickel and diming them and paying them for the minutes. |
|
Vet here again - and we are cheaper than any online pharmacy. We can offer rebates that they cannot. But people see FREE SHIPPING, etc...and take the bait. Go ahead....do it...
Seresto collars found on Amazon were not only found to be ineffective and counterfeit, but also toxic.... Using your vet is quality control.....cannot get that thru Amazon.... |
No, the OP never said they had to move for work....they just said "moving around so much"....vague. |
OP said that a test was done at regular clinic this year but they also wanted proof of the dog taking pills. Please read more carefully. |
| Usual standard is dog has to be tested every 12 months before vet will prescribe heart worm meds. No med is 100% effective and vet needs to make sure dog is heartworm negative each year before giving new prescription for preventatives. Sounds like problem is you didn’t have this vet give approval for your purchase of meds, so they have no record you ever bought the prescription meds since last testing done. That means they don’t want to prescribe meds without making sure dog is heart worm negative now. Could call their practice manager, say you can provide info you bought and gave meds through different vet as were moving around. They may want to do blood test before prescribing meds - that is good clinical practice and normal. |
| Just pay for a new test. It isn't that expensive. |

Vet practice owner.
Not a FDA requirement for negative heartworm test before dispensing meds. However, you probably spoke to a tech or receptionist who doesn't know. I wouldn't leave because of it. You won't get an appt anywhere else with vets being swamped. |
Not a vet, but all OP needs to do is provide her receipt from the other clinic. Why can’t she call the the other clinic and have them email it to her and her vet? I do this all the time as I have performance horses that sometimes need specialists. |
| I was recently on vacation and my dog was sick, so I took her to a local clinic. It was time for heart worm stuff too so I had them do the test and got 6 months of meds. I absolutely had them give a copy of results and receipt and put it in my dog’s health file for this very reason. A vet absolutely should not just trust you on this as there are too many people out there who readily lie about things, not realizing it could harm the animal. |
|
If the dog is currently negative there’s no reason they need proof the dog had been on meds. What if you brought in a stray to adopt with no medication history? What do they do in that instance?
Stupid. |
The test is not current. It was done months ago. The vet wants evidence the dog has been on the meds between the test and now, or retest to ensure the result is still negative. I don’t see why that is hard to understand at all. Would your doc start you on a new medicine based on bloodwork done 6 months ago? Wouldn’t it be better to treat you based on your current bloodwork? |
Exactly.....this is one of the reasons the veterinary industry is crumbling. They are dealing with people demanding things unreasonably. I WANT IT NOW ..... thoughts of Veruca Salt running thru my head.... |
OP never said when it was done in 2021. How do you know it was 6 months ago? |
