Good safety schools for those who like W&M?

NJ native here. Yes, CNJ definitely qualifies as a poor man's William & Mary. Only 7 percent of its students are from out of state and they're working to increase that so it's actually easier to get in from out of state than in. They also offer merit aid.

Of course, it's got nowhere near the reputation of William & Mary. But in the tri-state area it's highly regarded.

It is? NJ native here and I have never heard of it - is it the former Trenton State? If so, I would hardly call it “highly regarded” in NJ - the state flagship Rutgers is barely highly regarded by many NJ residents.

Then you're behind the times, that's all. Because yes, it is highly regarded. It's actually more selective than Rutgers.

And yes, you've heard of it. You know it's the former Trenton State. You're just being cute.

You're not a Virginia resident.

I am, and I would not want my kid who just missed W&M to go to UMW.

My kid was WL at W&M and had a great experience at UMW. Was not interested in the bigger sporty schools.

Rutgers isn’t selective either.

I posted this same question a few years ago OP if you want to try to find the thread. My DCs wanted WM size or smaller. Liberal artss school, focus on undergrad teaching. in the Southeast and not too far from home. Both ended up getting into WM ED, but we had also looked at Wake Forest, Davidson(neither not really a safety), and Elon and Furman as truer safeties. They probably would have applied to UVA if they hadn’t gotten ED at WM but wanted something smaller. We looked at Kenyon but it felt too rural to them. I would also suggest Rhodes and Sewanee if you are willing to go farther away.

Certainly their football team isn't.

I’m not being “cute” at all - I had to look it up to confirm. You’re being delusional if you think College of NJ is selective or highly regarded - I’d put it on par with U of Mary Washington. (this is not to say you can’t get a good education there because you can at most colleges.)

And your reading comprehensive skills are lacking, perhaps because of the bubble you now live in. I said it was highly regarded in the "tri-state area" -- translation, locally and not necessarily in the DMV -- and I said it was "more selective than Rutgers," which it is (49 versus 61 percent). I also said it has "nowhere near" the reputation of W&M and is doesn't.

All of this true. It's the only public college ranked in the top 10 in US New's regional rankings for the north (it's ranked 5). It's the school of choice for NJ students who want/need to stay in state but think Rutgers is too big. My entire family still lives in NJ and my niece who is now a lawyer went elsewhere in state because CNJ rejected her.

The OP asked for safeties, and it's as good a safety as any in many ways. Not to mention, again, that it actually favors out of state students in admissions.

That you had to "look it up" to confirm only means one thing -- you don't know anything about it. That doesn't make me wrong; it merely makes you uninformed.

UVA is definitely not a safety for WM. Anecdotally, I know several kids who got into WM and got rejected from UVA, not even waitlisted. In fact, one person got into WM, but got waitlisted at VT (was for their comsci program, though)...and she was one of several valedictorians!

This happened to one of DS's friends too.

Sounds like it's especially good to consider as a safety if the student thinks they'd want to work in the NY area after college. That's an important consideration when looking at regional schools. Their network and recruiting will be best in that region. So, if you don't think you want to live there, don't apply to that school.

It really is a crapshoot. My oldest was waitlisted at W&M but accepted to UVA. My youngest was waitlisted at both but got into UVA off the waitlist in June. Both were girls. Generally speaking, a boy applying to both has a better chance at W&M for sure, but for girls it's either even or slightly more difficult for them to get into W&M. Gender definitely matters.

VT did a lot of yield protection this year as has been discussed many times on this forum

W&M is somewhat unusual as it has a LAC feel, it’s a State school and it is well ranked. Matching that will be hard as LACs are private. If you have the stats to get into W&M you will probably need those to get aid at a private. Tough choices. And W&M just got more expensive also.

Not in-state. W&M has kept the same tuition, fees, room and board for incoming in-state students the same for at least the past 4 years. And they have a policy where your tuition and fees are guaranteed not to rise from your incoming rate. It is already the most expensive in-state public (though some specific programs at UVA are about the same) but it's been holding its costs steady for awhile now.
