If I were going to tip 20% or more, I’d dine in or get delivery....

Why? It’s often below minimum wage employees who are packaging the orders?

In some restaurants it might be but especially during COVID many places are using hosts or people with a higher hourly rate instead of servers making $2.13/hour

Okay. But if you don't know, you err on the side of generosity and decency. At least some people do.

+1 I tip anywhere from $2-5 but that's it.

On a $100 order?

On everything. We are big tippers in general.

I usually tip at my convenient %. Round up or round down.
If the meal is about $88 and I happen to have a $100. That's what I will give. I don't bother with the extra few dollars which I don't usually have.

I tipped 20% when restaurants were open only for takeout, but am back to 10% for takeout now. The efforts involved in packaging food is not the same as waiting on tables.

Lmao no, I never did becuase the rest of you made up the difference.

restaurants workers in California (where I live) make over $15/hr plus got to sit home on the dole with an extra $600 weekly while I went to work. I tip zero take out, and previously I tipped 20% on top of tax, and now it’s just 20% before tax. They made their money.

NP. Where I live there is a higher minimum wage and no separate server's minimum. But I now primarily go to restaurants where I know workers are paid benefits and healthcare. If you are so concerned about food service workers, I wonder why you don't feel the responsibility to seek these places out? But your post really highlights the big issue with tipping culture, which is making customers responsible for the income and well being of food service workers, instead of holding employers accountable for not paying their employees a living wage.

I started tipping high for Grubhub/other services because those drivers get very little. I tip flat $20-25 because it doesn't make a difference to them if the order is $20 or $100.

No. I'm back to like $5 for takeout.

Just here to say as someone tied to the restaurant business that tipping for takeout is NOT normal. It's certainly nice and unexpected. 20% would be WELL outside of normal, so I think that this board has quite a few anomalies. If you give anything for a takeout order, you can feel pretty good about yourself. You're far more generous than most.
