| Sorry, I do see Landon on the list. But no STA? |
Whitman is better than most of the schools on that list |
as with all other schools - the numbers to these two schools varies from year to year. |
Exactly. Sending one kid to one of these schools says very little. |
That is your opinion. |
| Without numbers, it's just the same list that every K-8 has. |
| Norwood provides an enjoyable (yes perhaps shielded) environment while nurturing solid academics (not top) and allowing kids to develop emotionally without much social drama. The parents typically have a high socio-economic level and are not obsessed with academic prestige. All together these elements create a homogenous group (indeed not very diverse despite noble efforts) that, besides being healthier than elsewhere, all other private schools could use. However, in practice, the top privates do not absorb a large portion of Norwood students who typically go to other schools on that list (no need mention names) which are often even more expensive, not prestigious and with median academics at best (even compared to public schools which have been falling behind recently). |
| Another words - many more kids go to bullis and st andrews then go to sidwell, gds, maret, potomac, STA and NCS. |
| Exactly. |
This is all very misleading and it is simply not true that there are not top academic students at Norwood. Each class varies in where they land. In my child's year the breakdown was as follows (placing these in buckets, rather than school by school). You can hardly say this is not strong placement. Sidwell, STA, GDS: 17 Potomac, Holton, St Stephens St Agnes: 8 Landon, Burke, St Johns, Field, St Andrews, Georgetown Prep, Bullis: 15 Public (by choice ): 7 Boarding/Moved: 4 In some years, clusters occur - I've seen it at GDS, Sidwell, Maret, Landon, Bullis, Georgetown Prep . I've always been amazed at how it varies and how it reflects the personality of the graduating class. Norwood's "numbers" to any given school vary year by year - whether that be a Bullis or a Sidwell.... And many of the families that return to public have very strong students and there are also very strong students that don't end up at a Big 3 (for whatever reason - competition from classmates, large sibling group, no fianancial aid etc.) |
This doesn't make any sense. STA takes 10 local kids for 9th in most typical years (the rest are boarders). There's no way that Norwood got 5+ of those spots in any year. |
| The breakdown with Norwood placements does not seem plausible to me either. But maybe it is. The reality is that Bullis and St. Andrews absorb a lot. These are good schools but not very rigorous academically or as competitive as others. People in Norwood searching for academic rigor often switch their kids before 9th grade so they get ready for high school in a more competitive setting. Norwood is a great school but it is not correct to put it a high academic level. Grades are inflated and parents need to complement a lot to get the bar truly high in terms of preparation. Bullis and St. Andrews cater to the typical Norwood school. It makes total sense. It is a great path. |
To be clear - this does not say more than 5 went to STA - It means that 17 students from the class went to either Sidwell, or STA, or GDS. I purposely did not the breakdown to each individual school... but I will say that each school had at least 3 (and clearly the others had far more than 3 to add up to 17) |
Sure - I'm just posting lies? I don't know where you are getting your information or your perception - but it's just wrong. Our year there were 4 total at Bullis and St Andrews combined from the entire class. It's simply not true that those two schools absorb the typical Norwood student. The fact is, that Norwood does a great job at reaching all kinds of students, and their variety of schools on the list each year and the fact that the numbers vary from year to year speak to that. |
It still doesn't make any sense. On their website, Norwood has 2019 results and it is Sidwell (1), GDS (2), STA (1). 4 total. I have a hard time believing that either Sidwell or GDS BOTH took 7 kids from Norwood in a recent year. |
