OFFICIALS problem

For young refs, it's already more money than most jobs they could have (hourly, at least). They're not quitting because they're underpaid.

We need better training -- for coaches, for players, for refs ... even parents.

It's more on the coaches.

I don't get it.

Gym parents don't yell during competitions. - No, but they do complain about judging / scores. Some of the most obsessed and manipulative parents out there
Ballet parents don't yell during competitions or recitals. - See “Dance Moms” and “Black Swan”. Image shaming, depressive activity for many.
Music parents don't yell during competitions or recitals or concerts. - it’s not a spectator sport and no fouls or jostling or complex, real time offsides rules. Dumb analogy
Chess parents don't yell during games. - it’s not a spectator sport and no fouls or jostling or complex, real time offsides rules. Dumb analogy
Robotics parents don't yell during games. - it’s not a spectator sport and no fouls or jostling or complex, real time offsides rules. Dumb analogy.
Debate parents don't yell during bouts. - it’s not a spectator sport and no fouls or jostling or complex, real time offsides rules. Dumb analogy

Sports parents.
You can do better.

See above. Naive and uneducated post. Ballet and Music are performances, not competitions. Gymnastics, chess, robotics, and debate are competitions but with very clear rules and with events unfolding in slow, close, easy to observe and discern time.

Btw. Did you not see the last few presidential debates? Possibly, if the audience had been allowed to boo and hiss the debate moderators and candidates it would have been better.

Plus the culture of team sports is to be a “fan” and to put your heart and soul into rooting for your team. That’s part of the fun. Kids get excited when they hear their sidelines cheering for them. If some refs make bad calls and are booed for it, well then maybe they should make better calls. Yes, it goes over the top sometimes. I referred when I was a teenager and never had any issues at that age handling loud parents. One game a group of parents started yelling at their kids to kick the other team. I blew my whistle, stopped the game and told the coach in a loud firm voice that if the parents didn’t be quiet that I would red card him first, then one by one start red carding players from their team at random. They shut up quickly. Problem solved. Refs can diffuse many situations through dispassionate communication and being the adult in the room. Often, they don’t and end up getting sucked into the pettiness of players and spectators who are emotionally involved. It is the ref’s job to control the proceedings. I knew this as a player, ref, coach, manager, and parent/spectator. Refs should be trained (repeatedly) in this aspect of the game, not just the laws of the game and they’d be better for it.

Not sure what the technical justification would be for that, but I love it.

Maybe "delaying a restart"?

Surely there is a “don’t be an a$$hole” rule for U littles?

Early this year in U9, our parents were yelling to a ref that a kid was crying after a hard fall. Ref comes over and sends her off sobbing- the other coach got furious yelling at us, yelling at the ref, yelling at our coach. It’s U9 and a kid is balling, just pull them. Save the macho though act for high school or college (except then, coaches know enough to pull an obviously injured player

Especially when there's unlimited subbing! Just take them off and put them back on again if you need to. To me this is coaching at its worst. Get your ego out of the way, coach.

Gym parents don’t tell from the sidelines, they just send their kids to gyms where they get molested by team doctors.

Chess parents can't yell during the games because they aren't allowed in the room with their kids. Too bad we can't keep them off the fields too. I remember when my kids were playing rec in Arlington, silent soccer weekend was my favorite.
