See above. Naive and uneducated post. Ballet and Music are performances, not competitions. Gymnastics, chess, robotics, and debate are competitions but with very clear rules and with events unfolding in slow, close, easy to observe and discern time.

Btw. Did you not see the last few presidential debates?  Possibly, if the audience had been allowed to boo and hiss the debate moderators and candidates it would have been better.

Plus the culture of team sports is to be a “fan” and to put your heart and soul into rooting for your team. That’s part of the fun. Kids get excited when they hear their sidelines cheering for them. If some refs make bad calls and are booed for it, well then maybe they should make better calls. Yes, it goes over the top sometimes. I referred when I was a teenager and never had any issues at that age handling loud parents. One game a group of parents started yelling at their kids to kick the other team. I blew my whistle, stopped the game and told the coach in a loud firm voice that if the parents didn’t be quiet that I would red card him first, then one by one start red carding players from their team at random. They shut up quickly. Problem solved. Refs can diffuse many situations through dispassionate communication and being the adult in the room. Often, they don’t and end up getting sucked into the pettiness of players and spectators who are emotionally involved. It is the ref’s job to control the proceedings. I knew this as a player, ref, coach, manager, and parent/spectator. Refs should be trained (repeatedly) in this aspect of the game, not just the laws of the game and they’d be better for it.
