Then congrats on finding work that is apparently worse than what the people whom you are complaining about have. Critical thinking wasn't a prerequisite for your employment I take it? |
me too. I expect a note from the assistant principal this week. One way or the other. |
Ok “teacher” ![]() |
Go teach yourself what a 'contract' is. |
APS has certainly made mistakes, but they did wait until teachers were vaccinated and also just approved a decent pay package. The teacher haters are 100% TRASH. |
I agree with everything you said but the decent pay package. It's much better than what was originally offered, but basically crumbs after taxes. I'm not sure the modest step increase and COLA will keep teachers here next year. |
EL 1’s and 2’s (newcomers) IEP students who qualify for ESY: that is, in your IEP it provides for summer school because you have critical life skills as your goals and the team determines summer services are necessary to address them. If unsure, check your IEP under the “ESY” page. It would be detailed there. Originally all students with IEP’s were eligible regardless of academic need. For example a student who has speech services only for articulation would get to attend the reading and math strengthening program even if on or above grade level. |
Perhaps, but not an APS teacher. Every APS teacher knows very well that summer school is outside the contract and not a "duty." |
This should have been obvious to everyone paying the least bit of attention. I don’t blame teachers one bit for not signing up. That’s why it was so important to get kids in for more days this spring. Don’t need to worry about staffing and our kids desperately need every day they can get. |
Gee- I wonder why teachers are clamoring to work this summer?! Teachers are BURNT OUT. They need higher pay. Period. If you want APS schools to stay “top notch”, pay our teachers better so that the good ones stay for years. |
As a parent of a child with a language disorder, you aren't getting speech services for articulation. |
Its not even the pay, its how they are treated. Working summers is voluntary. It is not in their contract. Also if its in person, many may not want in person but would be ok virtual. |
I used to teach summer school pre-kids but now the pay is not worth the cost to put my kids into camps or daycare. I didn’t go into teaching for the summers off but they certainly are one of the few perks I have left. |
Yes I know that. But I did get an initial letter of eligibility for summer school math/reading strengthening because of his status as a student with an IEP. All students with an IEP for any reason were initially eligible. Now it’s only those with ESY. I had opted out already. |
Have you considered teaching, then? Sounds like you could do less work for more money. What's stopping you? I wish i had summers off, and occasionally consider teaching (I'm an office drone), but then think about how different K-12 is from being a grad school TA, which I loved. And I stay at my desk. You could chose to change careers too. |
