APS cancels Summer school for many previously qualified students due to lack of staffing

Perhaps APS should pay them physician’s wages then.

Perhaps teachers’ degrees should be harder to obtain. As it stands, it’s one of the easiest degrees to get.

PP is a physician, but I am a nurse that also had to go in. Hospital custodians, and hell, even Costco workers, went to work without complaint. The entire time.
Without sufficient PPE. Was it stressful? Absolutely! But we are essential workers, just as teachers are.

So cut the crap about having “the worst year ever”. It’s a bit tone deaf when WE ALL HAVE HAD THE FIRST YEAR EVER.

Or fine, take the summer break, and then don’t ever complain about your low salaries ever again.

They didn’t go in without complaint. Be clear. You’re literally here complaining that you, a nurse, had to handle a health crisis. Teachers did not ever sign up to teach in summer and don’t get paid to. It’s not the same.

I went to work without complaint. My complaints are with others that are too lazy to do their jobs.

Who didn’t do their job? I just got home from school. I’ve been working since August when we returned. Your argument is invalid. Teachers worked the whole year.

Bahahahahahaha

Oh, you're a child. Got it.

Oh, you’re lazy and mistakenly think you’re able to do your job well from home. Got it.

It is laughable that a nurse is telling teachers their degrees are too easy to get. It is also laughable that a nurse is pretending that your colleagues across the country haven’t gone on strike multiple times in the past year.
Nurses are just patient care techs with egos. You guys are not medical providers.

Don't do this. Don't make fun of nurses at the nursing profession. They are profession that has worked extremely hard over the last year and always and are constantly underrated with what they bring to the table.

However you should make fun of this nurse who posted ignorant things

You’re right, they should be allowed to say horrible things about other female driven professions but you’ve crossed a line if you dare point out their hypocrisy. And I’m sorry, but they aren’t. They can’t write prescriptions, develop treatment plans, or perform procedures. They aren’t even qualified to suture. But sure, “Nurses are heroes!”

I hope you never have to be in the hospital, in a lot of pain and begging for someone to come help you...when that nurse comes by your bedside, you will not think of her/him as a hero/e...more like a god.

Oh, barf. I’ve been hospitalized multiple times and I assure you. I have never thought of nurses “as a god.” Get over yourself.

We've had 6 total applicants and of those, only 4 qualified on paper. Our superintendent has been begging teachers to enroll in sped certificate courses. Looks like we're going to have a lot of classes staffed with rotating subs and some gen ed classes will just get bigger. I typically have around 25 students and if we can't find another teacher for my team it'll be 32+. This isn't only going to affect summer

Which school district are you in? I fear that summer school is the least of our problems. A vast teacher shortage hopefully is not on the horizon next fall.

I am in FCPS so maybe not supposed to comment on this forum, but same situation here. We have hundreds of openings, including a ton in sped. Most of the applicants are minimally qualified and they'll probably get assigned to very challenging classrooms.

Did we see lastest, Duran now offering Vitual Virginia for those that cant do in person due to staffing. That only goes from 3rd grade up. So 1st and 2nd are left behind, but there is Lexa and Dreambox. No Thanks. I appreciate how he complimented the teachers for their hard work as this is really not their fault, but central office and school board shame on you!

What do you expect them to do??!! If teachers don't want to teach, they can't just conjure up hundreds of teachers. Offering Virtual Virginia is in direct response to people's complaints that summer school was "ripped from under them" and leaving them helpless and without child care for the summer; that APS needs to provide them something. So they're offering them VV. What freakin' else can you expect from them? And don't say offer the teachers more money because the fact is: A LOT OF TEACHERS DON'T CARE ABOUT THE FINANCIAL INCENTIVE AND JUST WANT A BREAK FROM A HORRIBLE YEAR BEFORE STARTING A WHOLE NEW SCHOOL YEAR!

That’s better than nothing. You think they should cancel VV option?

Wow, let it go. PP was just saying it was not on the teachers! You react as if you are defensive. If teachers don't stop being on the defense, there will be many fragments to be repaired other than Summer school.

the thing is as far as I can tell- APS solely recruited from within their own staff for summer school with a fairly paltry incentive. Then when teachers declined, their threw up their hands and said- oh well, what can we do.

By contrast- Loudoun started recruiting early and is paying $75 an hour.

Falls Church City started recruiting early, I don't know what they are paying, but they were working on arranging for short term housing for teachers who were interested in being in DC for a portion of the summer.

I don't fault any teacher for declining to teach summer school. If you want to earn money- there are better ways to do it (e.g. run a camp all summer, tutoring etc.) If you want time off with your kids, working a few hours a day for a few weeks is hardly worth it to pay for childcare and lose the time with your kids.

I absolutely fault APS for not thinking creatively about how to staff it and not putting even a minimal effort into doing so.

No money to pay teachers?

Ahh if only the most profitable company in united states moved to Arlington and the county could tax them instead of the board giving Jeff bezos anything he wanted

First of all, I'm not a teacher. I'm a parent sick of everyone being so critical and over-reacting to every single thing APS does or does not do or how they do or how they don't do it. Second of all, I don't think you're following the commentary accurately. PPP was criticizing the offering of VV for 3rd grade up and leaving the younger kids behind with just Lexa and Dreambox. ("No thanks.") I'm asking what PPP - and so many others who are criticizing APS for "pulling the carpet out from under them" regarding summer school what it is they expect APS to do if they don't have the teachers available to provide summer school for everyone. it is not Duran's fault, either.

I think someone answered this when they said what Loudon anf Fall Church City proactively did. If you accept mediocrity then that is what APS will be. It is Duran's fault.

OK; but if teachers don't want to sign-up, they don't want to sign-up. No one ever accused APS of acting on something quickly or early. School Board should have been pushing for earlier action, if everyone thought it was so obvious APS was going to need to do so.

If a nurse checks on you a few times a day you are lucky. The only time I saw anyone when I was hospitalized was at shift change. Except a slimy male nurse who kept coming in to chat and made me really uncomfortable.

In a typical year, APS has about 2000-2500 students in its summer school program (non covid). With the expanded eligibility they were hoping to serve 5,000 students this year. That is double the usual amount and in a normal year they usually are begging for teachers to participate. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize this was never gonna happen. They weren’t going to be able to hire double the normal amount of teachers after the year we’ve had for what is basically $10 (pretax!) more per hour. It was wishful thinking.
