Go into the woods? What woods?

The woods behind the baseball field. Have you ever seen Yorktown?

The school has a pretty serious drug problem, but maybe not more so than area privates with a similar socio-economic student body.

I live right there!!!

Those are not woods.

Np - am I the only parent that has taken their toddler to chestnut hills and gotten a big whiff of weed?! Reading the post I assumed that’s what was being referred to. I’d frequently hear kids laughing in the trees, never went to find them, so maybe they were just having “lunch”

I'm sure you could mine the internet and come up with a similar list for other schools. The biggest issue for Yorktown is that it's considered academically weak compared to other schools in NoVa that primarily draw from upper middle class neighborhoods. That's on APS, not a few teens in the woods.

huh. All I found was articles about the new building, ratings and positive parent reviews/comments, and a bunch of recent articles about the racial slur issues with Marshall HS. Guess I'll have to search the dark corners of the internet.

LOL. Maybe you're just the only parent willing to admit it; or who noticed the smell as something "not right" rather than perfectly normal and acceptable behavior.

If you didn’t find a Wakefield related news story from the past couple of days I have doubts that you actually searched. Lol.

Most of the Yorktown stories were about the school culture and involvement of large groups of students, not one pissed off (clearly dangerous) kid.

I don't think most of her friends do either. They do occasionally sneak off campus and go to the Harrison Shopping Center for coffee or lunch.l0

Ummm yeah sure...

I’m not pp, but why is that unbelievable to you?

I guess people who convince themselves that all high schoolers are skipping school to drink and hook up in the poison ivy aren’t really rational, so forget I asked.

Keep clutching those pearls and move along. You probably don't really know your high schooler(s).

NP These kind of broad brush statements make me laugh. Parents, by and large, do know their own kids. I guess because either you were one of those degenerate high school kids or your kid is one - you can’t imagine that there are kids that have good relationships with their parents and aren’t sneaking off to a strip of 5 trees to drink. It shows such ignorance. But my real guess is that you can’t afford Yorktown. Signed a HS that didn’t skip school but drank and smoked pot.

That one actually didn't pop up; but noted. OK. One. Involving one student not indicating a cultural pattern within the school overall. OK.

So, we're going to use an article about 40 kids at a drunken party 8 YEARS AGO to pass judgement on 2100 kids in 2021?

If you want a better view of Yorktown kids, check out this photo essay from last year of kids who were coping with the loss of their senior year milestones with grace and composure: https://www.mattmendelsohn.com/seniors/forgotten-yorktown-seniors-2020
I see a huge diversity--maybe not in race or ethnicity but certainly in interests and personality.

The articles span a period of time and lend credence to the reputation.
And oh boy! Diversity in interests and personality!?!? You are really reaching to defend YHS if that's the best you can come up with. WL and WHS have diversity in interests and personalities, too, not that I see where the relevance of that to the drug and drinking culture lies.
