Banneker High School

Anonymous
I am looking at Banneker for my middle schooler. It seems like an excellent academic program, but I am concerned that it may not offer a particularly well-rounded high school experience. From what I can gather it doesn’t seem to have many extracurricular activities, and the kids have too much homework to participate in outside activities anyway.

+1. Only issue for us is locations, we live near Wilson.

I’m white and live in NW. I could get over the location part. I would be interested in my daughter going, but I’m not sure she would see the benefits at her age. I guess the question is do you force a high schooler because it would be a great experience if they didn’t want to leave their friends??

My kid’s friends are attending Wilson and Walls. My kid wanted IB and decided to not base schooling decisions around friends. The decision where to go was entirely my kid’s choice because I’m not doing the work. But I do admit not all kids think like this. While leaning towards IB, my kid didn’t want to go to Wilson because it’s too big and really disliked the Walls interview.

I did not want to force my kid either. I encouraged her to strongly consider Banneker or Walls but in the end she said she wanted a regular HS experience rather than a more specialized academic-focused school. We also live 5 minutes from Wilson. She is graduating this year and while Wilson has been a mixed experience, it was probably the best choice for her.

My opinion? It's not a top choice here because Banneker is 2% White. Folks aren't willing to have their child be an "only".

People will come up with all kinds of elaborate excuses but it's just that. It's a great school.I think there's an actual percentage of white kids for most white families to feel comfortable sending their kids.

What is interesting is that back in the late 90's School without Walls was majority black my husband was one of the 3 white students who graduated in his class

I’m a white parent and want to add more context to our choice not to consider Banneker. I am wary of taking a spot that would otherwise go to a Black child. It feels wrong to come in and take advantage of something fantastic that Black people built to help academically inclined Black children get a leg up in this world. Just doesn’t feel right to me.

Agree. I’m done posting on Banneker threads. I’m a white parent with a student at Banneker. I’m done with the idiots on this topic.

A completely off-topic question: what is the difference between STEAM and a regular, well-rounded high school curriculum?

JFC, I don't know what I would do if I met you IRL.
