Why is Banneker High School not a top choice for families on this forum. I never see any posts about this school. The school has high test scores and a high college acceptance rate.
This school would be on the top of my list if my child was entering high school. Just curious? |

It has okay test scores. Not really that high. Also it lacks sports.
Be aware you are not seeing the full picture of demand. If someone really likes Banneker and ranks it 2nd, but matches with their #1 pick (say, McKinley Tech), they don't get waitlisted at Banneker. But they would have been happy to attend. |

My kid graduated from Banneker. You should search "Banneker DC Urbanmom" on google and you'll see the many discussions there have been on this board.
My opinion? It's not a top choice here because Banneker is 2% White. Folks aren't willing to have their child be an "only". |
| Hasn't this horse already been beaten to death? There was a very long thread on this a week or two ago |
https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/963697.page Doubt you will get anything more on this thread than was shared there. |
I am not sure what you consider high test scores but the PARCC scores most recently was 96% On or Above Level in ELA and 83% On or Above Level in Math. |
Of course. Everything else people say about it is also true for schools which there's much more talk about and demand for. That doesn't mean that for some people those aren't the real issues, but they're clearly not the only issues. |
That's not that great in math, IMO, for a selective school. The ELA is okay but the prior year was only 92%. At a selective school, test scores should be assessed in light of that selectivity and be better than general admission schools. SAT scores I know are also an area of concern. I have also heard of a lack of special needs support, and the attrition among boys is concerning. I am not sure why it happens, but it is. I don't have personal knowledge of this stuff but that is what I happen to have heard. |
| I think it is a top choice. Wilson, Walls, Latin, and Banneker, and McKinley Tech if you're into science, are all top choices that I hear people talk about. I would be happy to send my kids to Banneker. |
|
You don't hear that much about Walls or McKinley here either. I think it is because there are no address or feeder rights, basically nothing you can do to obtain access other than apply at your time. So nobody's trying to get their pk3 kid in or shop for a house in the pyramid.
If Banneker parents do not care to air their discussions here, that reflects well on them. |
| Wonder how people will react to Banneker High School when it moves to Rhode Island Avenue, NW close to a Metro Starion. |
Personally I am excited about the new building. The old location was doable from my house but the new one is a bit better. But the old location was not super far from metro and bus either. |
The building is gorgeous! |
I agree. Many White folks on DCUM won't even consider it. My kid went through the process, applied, and didn't get accepted. I would have been happy for her to go there if that was what she wanted. She didn't and she told them basically that she couldn't handle the pressure of the work in her interview, so it wasn't surprising that they turned her down. I get that maybe it's not the right school for your kid but I don't get ignoring the school completely. I think race plays a big role. |
| I tried to find a thread to help you - there are hundreds of mentions of Banneker. I have read posts about it before. It is not being ignored. |
