Absolutely. My kids both, at two different schools, both tell me you can’t question affirmative action or the Black Lives Matter movement without being labeled a racist. People don’t even want to hear opposing viewpoints even if it’s not racist — such as give all kids a better education from the beginning so that everyone can compete equally. Or maybe all the woke people think that’s racist.

Tragic that children can't share their own feelings, observations or opinions in school. What's the point?

These woke schools are raising a bunch of self righteous lemmings who can’t think, listen, or respond without name-calling or deflecting. Terrible.

The only true systemic racism today is the DOJ ruling that colleges are allowed to discriminate against Asian applicants despite being more qualified. Everything else is just individual bias that is not consistent with the law. Systemic racism is Jim Crow laws, Japanese internment, Nazi laws against Jews, educational exclusion of Jews, Chinese Exclusionary Act...all pre-1960's. In America today, anyone with the determination to get ahead can do so without a law getting in the way. Even so, in my opinion, although not true systemic racism, the closest thing to it today is the dumbing down of American public education and the welfare system that encourages single-parent households. While these two things affect both Blacks and Whites, it disproportionately affects Blacks and makes it very difficult to get ahead. However, with enough determination, ability and luck, it's possible for these people to get ahead because there are no laws prohibiting it. This cannot be said for many other countries. That is why immigrants come to America and tend to do better here than their American-born counterparts because they don't internalize the hurt caused by individual bias and allow it to make them a victim. Victim mentality is a sort of internal prison.

This is a common tactic by the right against the left: to attack the words. Defund the police. Black lives matter. Systemic racism. You poke holes in the words. Fine. Words matter, and the left is picky about language, too. But what lefties (like me) often hear is that those on the right dismiss the words and reject the conversation in whole.

So how do we have this conversation about what many call systemic racism and you and many others call a collection of individual biases? This bias plays out against people of color in multiple venues. In schools. When dealing with police. In courts. In housing. In the professional world. While walking. While birdwatching.

So it's not codified in law, but it sure is pervasive. How do we talk about it and how do we make our society more just?

I know how! Let’s teach only one viewpoint and political ideology to kids age 5-18 while they’re at school each day!

I am tired of being an open minded liberal just trying to exchange views and get conservatives to see my side and explain theirs to me when today's conservatives are QAnon and Fox News lobotomized robots who don't understand history and don't want to learn anything. They are convinced they are right and they will fight dirty to get their way, whether it's babies in cages at the border or denying Merrick Garland a hearing even while they push Barrett through in a fraction of the time or storming the Capitol. These people don't care about what's right or what's just, they just want to have their way because they think they know better.

Leave the fancy private schools some of you have been sending your kids to. That's great. More room for us. Enjoy your isolation with like thinking trolls and frog people. I tried caring about you and you disappointed me every time. Go sit at the bar and complain about how this economy has left you behind -- no one is coming to interview you anymore. You are hurting this country with your backwards ideas and your white, white butthurt. Do better (but take your time, we don't need you).

So here is the thing, one can debate differing viewpoints, but they have to be rooted in facts. If one truly believes there isn't systemic racism now and that there hasn't been since 1964 in the US, that simply isn't rooted in fact.

So go for the true dialogue, but not on this basis.

The author states: "We have not had systemic racism against Blacks in this country since the civil rights reforms of the 1960s, a period of more than 50 years. To state otherwise is a flat-out misrepresentation of our country's history and adds no understanding to any of today's societal issues."

I think that's a pretty fringe viewpoint, and certainly not one worthy of a new thread discussion.

You may need to step outside of your bubble. That is not a fringe viewpoint.

+1 and then some. It is not a fringe viewpoint - he just had the guts to articulate what many think. No matter what the media shoves down everyone’s throat 24/7 - fighting racism with racism is a bad idea for all.

This isn't fighting racism. This is simply ignoring the racism that exists and then opting out of an honest discussion. The school won't miss this family.

Give us examples of systemic racism since the 1960's (other than affirmative action).

Donald Trump and Steve Bannon and Jyle Rittenhouse

compare to

George Floyd, the average corner pot seller or Crystal Mason

Not an even playing field of justice, now is it?

Or how about https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-03/appraisers-acknowledge-bias-in-home-valuations

I could go on, but you will say these aren't systemic. Right?

I mean, listen to all the trolls in this thread who are like, no, whites use crack, too! Convince me more! Here is a hint: They don't care. They will never be convinced. You could sit them down and show them film of the Tulsa Massacre and they would say it was fake news, or America isn't like that anymore.

There are two Americas now, people who can see what's going on around them and people who can't because they don't seem to understand what's real anymore.

Stop wasting time on conservatives who deny reality. They aren't worth it. They won't change. They are laughing at liberals for still trying to reach them while they break laws and norms and put children in cages and then say they care about life and Christianity and morality.

I think that it is possible to disagree with the part of the letter that claims that there is not systemic racism and agree with the overall theme of the letter that expresses concerns with illiberalism and intolerance of different viewpoints, significant substantive changes in the curriculum, and erosion of quality standards.

Glad someone is standing up - I don’t agree with everything he says but I think we need more people questioning the current norm.

Liberals made the cages and Liberals are filling the cages to 1000%+ capacity at this very moment. Liberal policies are causing an unprecedented human trafficking and drug trafficking crisis at this very moment. Wake up people!

What do you mean by attacking the words?! Liberals never define the words so no one ever really knows what they're really talking about, and no one is allowed to ask because they'll just be branded a racist and/or canceled.

You want others to “see your side” but if you are honest with yourself, do you see any other side? You accuse others of being ignorant of history and not wanting to learn anything, yet you seem very angry, and I would suspect you are trying to “teach” others versus really listening and truly being open minded. Just a thought. Most people are generally moderate, but extremes on both sides are dangerous. You should self-assess and see where you fall, it may be eye opening. Plus most mainstream people, even conservatives, are not QAnon.
