Letter to Brearly Parents Decrying CRT Indoctrination

There are some parts I agree with such as if they are so committed to diversity, why are they accepting so many children of deep pocketed parents, some I don’t agree with. Quite the letter indeed.

Hmmm, my friend teaches there. Super cool and smart--I'd love the inside scoop

Why is this interesting or newsworthy?

The author states: "We have not had systemic racism against Blacks in this country since the civil rights reforms of the 1960s, a period of more than 50 years. To state otherwise is a flat-out misrepresentation of our country's history and adds no understanding to any of today's societal issues."

I think that's a pretty fringe viewpoint, and certainly not one worthy of a new thread discussion.

I love this and am waiting to see who has the guts to write a
similar letter. Critical race theory is not appropriate and not helpful. The fact this is happening in NYC means it will finally be addressed here. Parents are open to curriculum that addresses past injustice but the teaching that being born white means you are entitled and a racist is just plain wrong.

You may need to step outside of your bubble. That is not a fringe viewpoint.

The letter writer needs to step out of HIS bubble if he thinks that's true.

I think Brearley will be better off without this dad and his daughter. The letter uses all the buzz words of the far-right political community: comparing the school to the Chinese Communist Revolution, claiming that Black Lives Matter is a "Marxist, anti family, heterophobic, anti-Asian and anti-Semitic organization," claiming the school is "trying to usurp the role of parents in teaching morality," and, of course, lamenting "cancel culture." He also does not share one example of what he laments that the school is doing. And to say that there has been no systemic racism in the United States since the civil rights movement in the 1960's is just laughable.

The best part of the letter is this: "I object to the lowering of standards for the admission of students and for the hiring of teachers. I object to the erosion of rigor in classwork and the escalation of grade inflation. Any parent with eyes open can foresee these inevitabilities should antiracism initiatives be allowed to persist." he has absolutely no idea if the admissions department has lowered their standards - he just assumes so since they have tried to admit a more diverse student body. But, of course, he could never be accused of being racist for thinking so.

The letter is getting tons of praise in conservative circles and is all over conservative media. I'm not so sure its such a great lettertthat they all think it is.

Here in leftist Kookaid land? I would hate to be a private sector person with kids at a couple of the super leftist schools here. Your kid would be uncomfortable as well, whether they’re black being told everyone hates them or white being told everyone in history hated others.

I am sure both Brearly will do just fine without this family.

I bet more families will leave, now that the lunacy is articulated.

One thing that is absolutely true is that these schools
Don’t want a true dialogue and different view points. I see it at my kids’ schools. You are a racist of you even hint at having a different viewpoint.
You all know I am right.
And I am a D and have no issue with the D&I training my kids are getting.

The letter is full of cliches, hyperbole, and Fox News talking points.

I’m sure how Brearly is reckoning with its legacy and reputation leaves much to be desired, but this is a rather simplistic letter. No new ideas here. Little nuance.

And he doesn’t use the Oxford comma.

Good that parents are starting to speak up, but most are still afraid of the bullies.

Absolutely. My kids both, at two different schools, both tell me you can’t question affirmative action or the Black Lives Matter movement without being labeled a racist. People don’t even want to hear opposing viewpoints even if it’s not racist — such as give all kids a better education from the beginning so that everyone can compete equally. Or maybe all the woke people think that’s racist.
