How bad are ticks at Acadia National Park?

Daily tick checks are imperative after outdoor activities. Or an immediate shower to wash off any that haven’t yet attached.

No dropping from trees.

They don't drop from overhanging branches onto you, but they certainly can and do hang out on branches higher than grass. If you brush up against a low hanging branch, they can transfer to you. It takes physical contact between you and the branch, but it does happen.

I’m pretty sure a strong breeze can blow ticks (and ants and spiders) from tree leaves and onto your head and body if you’re in a dense forest. Terrifying.

Just do checks every night. Plus in June the black flies will be so bad you won’t be out and about as much as you think.

Go every year. Hike and bike everywhere. We have never scene a tick in acadia. Most likely found near dog walking paths. Ticks come from the mass. and conn. dogs. I have scene in bushes in lower coast area. Kennebunk area.

Usually found about wrist high while walking.

We were in Acadia for 3 weeks in July/August. Hiked every day (sprayed ankles with deer every day before heading out. No ticks

Not the PP, but my kid got a tick this summer in VA on his shoulder, by his neck. He wasn’t crawling through the woods or anything. We thought maybe it dropped on his shoulder somehow? Guess he could have run into a branch?

They don't necessarily bite immediately. They crawl on you until they find a good latching spot, often someplace warm like at a joint, armpit, groin, neck where it bends...

Lots of ticks in the DMV area. People get them from their dogs or in their backyards, so I would not avoid Maine because of ticks.

Permethrin is very useful, but it is incredibly toxic to cats. Thoroughly wash your clothes you've treated with permethrin before interacting with your cats.

I've been to Acadia 7 or 8 times and hiked extensively in the park and have never had a tick.

We were there in July a few years back. Hiked every day, wore shorts, onto occasionally used bug spray and didn’t see any ticks. I’d worry more about hiking in VA honestly.
