I will admit I did not realize Maine is #1 for Lyme Disease. Did anyone encounter any ticks while in the park recently or in the past? We will be there in June.

Lots of ticks. Take all the normal precautions.
We go every year. |
Never had a problem there. I've got more issues walking around in the Greenbelt National Park area. |

Thanks PPs, I was thinking man, how are people hiking in shorts when it’s pretty heavily tick ground. But do you all tackle Acadia in pants or shorts?
What brand of repellant do you use? |
| I wouldn’t go. Doesn’t sound like a vacation if you have to worry about ticks the whole time. |
|
We didn't get any there that I am aware of.
We usually get 1-2 in our family per year in NOVA. |
You should get some lightweight hiking pants, tuck them into socks, and use repellant. There's a good non-smelly kind they sell at REI. |
I'm the pp. I did not do this on a trip to the area a few years ago and I did get a tick and did get Lyme. So I wouldn't mess around. |
| No issue with ticks last summer and we didn’t use spray or layers. (I don’t recommend that by the way!) |
+1 but use repellent anyway |
|
For hiking in heavy tick areas (or even heavy mosquito areas), I wear lightweight hiking pants (REI, Duluth Trading, and LL Bean are all good sources). I treat the clothes with permethrin:
https://www.rei.com/product/768970/sawyer-permethrin-pump-spray-24-oz And then I also use a DEET based repellent, especially around my ankles, but the permethrin is another layer of protection and not smelly. |
| I’ve never had an issue. I do use bug repellent though. |
| Never had an issue, go every summer |
| I wear shorts in Acadia if the temps call for that, which they often do according to my comfort level. I honestly don't even think about ticks, in that I think about them all the time and I'm just used to that. I've lived my entire life on the east coast, and daily tick checks 3 seasons of the year are just part of life. |
| I spend a month or so in Maine (including near Acadia) and Nantucket and the ticks are worse in Nantucket. Be smart, do tick checks but totally go and enjoy. |
