I love UVA (am not one of the obsessive boosters on dcum, tho), and I’d pick Harvard in a hot second. Harvard is really incomparable, if no reason other than arguably most well regarded university in the world.
However, if my kid LIKED uva better, I’d definitely back their decision because uva is great. |

Any updates, OP? |

Wait until tonight after the ivy results are out. It's like asking what you should buy if you win a lottery. Only worry about that after you win.
Any updates, OP?
Yup. Kid got in to Yale (not expected at all) and Brown. I'm not sure if he's better off in top 5%/ honors UVA, or at there where he is probably not gonna be a standout, and certainly won't come in with that presumption. Assume uva is cheaper but not by much. He has got a couple other choices between these, but this difference is the one I'm thinking about most right now. Not sure it has occurred to him. |

| Yale is an easy choice (unless cost is a concern). There is such as difference in potential professional opportunities. |

I think it depends on the personality of your child and what they want from college.
Top 5% at UVA does not really mean much other than living with other top 5% kids and early class selection. Does she/he want to be close to home? To visit home every break and know people from high school? If these things are important, UVA might be a good choice. If not, I would give serious consideration to the Ivys. |
| Congrats. I would pick Yale over Jefferson scholar, and I’m sorry to say that Echols/Rodman is nearly meaningless. |
+1, I would choose Jefferson Scholars UVA over Yale, but not Echols/Rodman over Yale or Brown unless there is a huge price differential. |
But OP never said DC was a Jefferson Scholar, which is much more different than Echols, etc. |
+1000. Same person who ignorantly associates UVA with tiki-torches, conveniently avoiding the fact that no students were on campus in August. I was there when it happened. The protesters had a permit for the park where the statue was to be removed. No one knew they were going to appear the night before at UVA. |
Agree. Don’t choose UVA for Echols/Rodman; it really doesn’t mean much in terms of student experience. Choose it because that’s where the kid wants to go. |
| I believe you need to commit to UVA first to be nominated as a Jefferson Scholar? So, you can't really turn down a Jefferson scholarship. |
It could be that way now, but it wasn’t when I attended in the 90s. My friend who was a Jefferson Scholar was admitted to and planning to go to an Ivy and then changed course when offered Jeff Scholar. (It also seems weird for UVA to do it that way if the goal is to compete with admissions to Ivy and other highly ranked schools. What student with those admissions is going to commit to UVA without the enticement of the full ride?) |

UVA Rodman is a pretty big deal. I'd say it's a bigger deal than Echols.
Jeff Schols don't have to commit to UVA. |
