Colleges That Change Lives (there's a book by that name)

You’ve got to be kidding.

Colleges that Change Lives. It is a book that looked at smaller less well known slacs - but now they are more well known because of the book.

Before 2019 for non-engineering, perhaps.

Not now.

Maybe ten years ago- and agree with pp- certainly not for engineering.

My cousin has a 4.2 gpa and didn't get into Ohio State. No idea what's going on.

What is the deal with Elon? I know kids who barely get through high schoool who have gotten in, and another who got into Georgetown, Lehigh, and Colgate, but waitlisted. Anyway, OP, what HS your kid is in also matters, especially if they consider private colleges/universities. My child will graduate with a 3.0 (hopefully) from one of the well-known DC privates. I was quite surprised by the bump that just going to one of these schools gave at pretty strong colleges, including Lehigh, Lafayette, and Bucknell. Still deciding between those and a couple state flagships. I'm not sure that a 3.0 from local public schools would have the same result, would it? Or is it being full-pay that also helps (although, surprisingly, kid also got a lot of merit from one of these schools).

Thanks for this! Ours will be applying in the fall with a 3.2 from one of the rigorous private High schools in the area and have been very worried.

Should shoot way frigg'n higher than these two. Elon and SCar are good choices.

PP who responded honestly. What's your problem? Radford has always had the reputation of "easy to get into, but hard to stay."

B and C average students deserve a college education. Not all of us are stellar students. My Radford University degree has served me very well.

This will probably be my kid. Look at College Confidential at the threads entitled "Class of 2021: GPA 3.0-3.4". That will give you good info about where those kids are getting accepted this year. We will be looking at St. Mary's College and Catholic colleges like Loyola, St. Joseph's, etc.

+1 The Jesuit schools mentioned above, plus others (not Georgetown) are all good options. For engineering/stem, consider Dayton and Drexel.

St. Joe's is a great choice. Great location, too.

My kid with those stats is at Wooster (yes a CTCL school). She says a lot of students in her class also applied to Ivies, NE small LAC and more competitive Ohio schools like Kenyon OT Oberlin. So, yes, Wooster was their safety but this means the student body is very smart.

I'd love to know more about it. I started looking at colleges recently and it looks like a good fit for my son. Do you have a child there now or who graduated?

PP

A few things:

- I believe the high school itself matters. Again, personal experience of OOS student w 4.0 applying to JMU from a tiny, tourist town HS: waitlisted.

- that said, above, don’t dismiss SLAC and or OOS - many actively recruit and covet dcumland HS students (3.0+) AND offer merit scholarships (DC offered this at Radford, VCU, IUP and Hood College)

SLACs are struggling. If you are full pay, you may be surprised at the caliber of school your kid can get into. And if your kid can go ED, then he/she will land surprisingly well.

I had cousins who went there and loved it. Catholic, but also pretty diverse. Wholesome, but still a good time. Good business school. Pretty campus right on the edge of Philadelphia.
