Fwiw - I have two kids in Aap and one in K & I just think the program / fcps is changing and that the program may not exist in the current form by the time my youngest is old enough.

What is the difference between teacher referral vs parent referral? Is it just who completes the package?

It means a child was referred by the Teacher. The Teacher thought the child belonged in AAP and wanted to make sure the child was considered. Parents can refer as well. In a normal year we know the in-pool test scores and parents will choose to refer a child who was not in-pool.

ANYONE can refer, even the child can refer himself.

I am going with any 7 year old who knows about AAP and can figure out the referral process is probably way beyond needing AAP.

Our AART mentioned that teachers, AARTs, and Principals are capable of referring a child and that they are encouraged to do so but I had not heard of anyone who said Teachers had referred. I know of people who learned about AAP when their kid was in-pool and the family received the letter from the school. I had not heard anyone say or post about Teacher referral. I believe that one of the outtakes from the equity report was that Teachers should be looking to refer kids that they think are eligible at Title I schools where test scores tend to be lower.

I think it is great that Teachers are referring kids. I know that AAP discussions are not allowed with parents. Teachers can try and encourage Parents to refer a child but they cannot flat out say that to Parents. I would hope that Teachers who see a child that they think would benefit from AAP, who is not in-pool because of test scores, would refer.

You’re ignoring the fact that is isn’t just 7 year olds in this scenario. A 7th grader could refer himself.

I would love to know how many times a kid has referred themselves. But yes any kid from the age of 7 to 13, assuming red shirting, could refer themselves for AAP.

This is interesting.... I wasn’t aware that a child can refer himself.

For us, teacher referred our DS.

My child was not in pool and referred by a teacher. We did not know anything about it until the school asked if we wanted to send work samples and a questionnaire.
