Man sitting in car for hours in front of neighbors house

All you people advocating calling the cops are nuts. The guy is doing nothing illegal or threatening.

IT IS ILLEGAL TO IDLE A CAR FOR MORE THAN 5 MINUTES AND 3 MINUTES IN MD AND DC, RESPECTIVELY. Except in less than 32 degree weather, if stopped in traffic or under mechanical failure.

In VA cars used for public service or for commercial purposes are not allowed to idle in residential areas.

He's a PI surveying not your neighbor's house, but a few houses further down the street (...or maybe he is watching you).

Have you never watched a crime thriller movie or TV show?

Yes, seriously. See something, say something. This is not the same thing as the Karen shit that blows up in your face.

THIS. Those advocating calling cops (who will come but be pi$$ed about being called out for nothing) and those insisting it's a PI or process server -- you must have gigantic homes where you can escape your family when you need to work, take a call in quiet, or just get the hell out for a while. Yeah, three hours sounds a bit long, but for all OP knows he's sitting there spending two of those hours watching a movie on his tablet because he's getting a break from the kids doing school at home.

And it's not illegal to sit in a car on a public street for three hours, or 10 hours. It may not make you comfortable but it's not illegal. If he seems OK, and OP says he does and isn't keeled over in the car, he's not doing anything wrong.

I take drives to get out of the house sometimes and will park and sit to read or listen to a radio program or podcast. I tend to park, if I'm on residential street, along the curb in an area where I'm between two properties. But if I were in front of a house, well, the street isn't their property, just as the street in front of my house isn't mine.

People on DCUM tend to think they own the curb space in front of their houses -- I've seen a lot of posts along those lines over the years here.

FWIW, a few years ago, my neighbors had cars parked outside of their house for weeks for security - even when they weren't home - because the husband was involved in a pretty high profile government anti-terrorism case - something like that. We were not made aware of this until well after the fact and were left confused by these cars for a long time. This probably isn't your situation, but you never know.

It isn't? Do you really want to call the cops on someone who is sitting in a car and is, as OP said in a post above, apparently on his phone? What if he's just reading or talking or, you know, existing? Why is that suspicious?

Are all of you totally unaware of this news story from a few years ago? It got quite a bit of coverage:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/07/15/i-was-just-reading-a-book-canadian-cops-called-on-black-man-reading-c-s-lewis-in-his-car/

"After the blue and red police lights flashed behind his car, Louizandre Dauphin figured he may have added another “prohibited” item to the list of things you can’t do while black: Reading.

Dauphin, 33, a former high school English teacher, had decided to relax last week with a few books at Stonehaven Wharf, a parking lot for fishing boats that’s frequented by tourists to the Canadian province of New Brunswick. He sat inside his Volkswagen Golf hatchback watching the waves and poring over “Mere Christianity” by C.S. Lewis and another book by theologian Timothy Keller.

As he drove home afterward, Dauphin recounted on Instagram, an officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police pulled him over, saying someone nearby had called authorities “because … a suspicious black man in a white car was parked at the Wharf for a couple hours. My response, Really? I was just reading a book.”

Do NOT do this. If you're really worried call the cops but know that there's a very good chance he IS a cop.

If it makes you feel better, jot down the license plate number, make and model.

I wouldn’t do anything further based on what you said.

Must not be an African American if cops have not been called already.

And this thread would be a lot longer by now, with all the Karen’s, Amy’s and Becky’s (all with BLM yard signs, btw) chiming in about how they also saw a random black guy sitting in a car minding his own business and were terrified.

Note the plate, make, model, person description. That's all for now.

I usually go out and take a picture with my phone in a way that is visible. Works every time.

Wait, how often has this happened to you?

So many Karens so little time.

This wouldn’t concern me.
