Many don’t want their kids to be in schools with kids who have lower income or who aren’t white.

There are some very white schools in Arlington, but other countries around here have plenty non whites in all schools.

Quality of schools is not positively correlated to whiteness. That’s a dumb thing to say.

it's correlated to farms rates. This holds true across most districts around here.

Farm is not an antonym to whiteness.

PP said lower income and lower income and FARMs are definitely synonyms

There's a widespread desire by media and politicos to make everything about race and to never, ever mention class. Lots of people refuse to see that this is deliberate obfuscate that makes discussions (and policy responses to serious problems) destined to fail.

I am not making anything about race. “ who aren’t white” is what the original post quoted claims - also bolded inside the quote.

If you go to Haycock or Colvin Run or Churchill Road Elementary, most students aren’t white, but the schools are some of the best in the country.

Yes. And how would you describe their social class?

I’ll chime in for Bethesda:
No bridges, seriously, we may have a longer commute than Arlington but there’s a million ways to get home if a bridge is blocked.
Easier access to NW DC
Downtown Bethesda is no longer cute or really home to mom and pop shops but it’s a good place to grab a bite to eat and the kids seem to love it
Schools are good and there’s a better selection of privates if that’s your jam
I know this is outdated, but personally, I could never live in part of the former Confederacy
If you are Jewish, it seems to be preferable

True. And certainly you are right nationally. But in this area (possibly east coast in general?) FARMs= POC

Probably right. I'm not even disagreeing with anyone here. BUT, these discussions ape what's said by big media and big politicos and *they* definitely like to hide that it's a $$$$ issue.

And there are scads of big $$$ POC around here if you know where to look.

Initially I though flooding was isolated to old town but I have learned how wrong I was. Also, I like to live in an area with good public schools as a backup even though my kids don’t go to them.

OP here. This is good to know, I thought the problem was confined to old town. But it seems like places like Rosemont and Beverly Hills don’t have those issues, do they? And those neighborhoods seem really lovely and a short drive to old town (as I said I want a suburban feel but a quick drive to a downtown).

We live in North Ridge/Beverly Hills area and love it. I think people hate on ACPS and the flooding in certain areas but we are dry here. It’s easy to get on 395, a 1.5 mile beautiful walk to Del Ray, a 1.5 mile walk to Shirlington, and just 3 miles to old town.

I’m waiting for the #justinstrafficjam lady to post I’m beginning to think it’s just to scare people away so Alexandria doesn’t become the next Arlington.

I know this is outdated, but personally, I could never live in part of the former Confederacy
If you are Jewish, it seems to be preferable

You do know that Maryland was a huge slave state, don't you? You care more about declarations of succession than you do about holding human beings in bondage? You're either a hypocrite or a moron.

Which is it?

LOL. Virginians penned most of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. A Marylander authored the Dred Scott opinion.

So don’t rule out the possibility PP is both a hypocrite and a moron.

I can't afford private plus a D.C. Area mortgage so I looked in areas with good publics. That eliminated DC and Alexandria fir me. I hate commuting so that eliminated much of fairfax and Montgomery county. Ended up in Arlington. I find parts of Alexandria charming, but I can go to those parts whenever I want, without living there.

Maybe I missed it, but I'm surprised nobody mentioned the difference in cost of living. Houses are significantly less expensive in Alexandria than in Arlington, McLean and Bethesda. Of course, you get what you pay for, but if living inside the beltway is important, you can more easily do it in Alexandria.

Yeah, the capital of the confederacy.
Nothing more to say.

And the entire state is blue now. What’s your point? And why stop where you did? The entire country has an ugly history of racism and bigotry. Genocide was committed against Native Americans across all four corners of the country. Are you going to refuse to live in the United States now? Or are you just going to cherry pick ugly parts of this country’s past that suit your narrative?

I love how she praises the whitest schools in Montgomery county (and of course, there are the private schools—wink, wink, event fewer POCs), and then pats herself on the back for not living in confederate VA.

It was the capital of the confederacy. If it was for VA, slavery would still be legal or at least it would take another century to be abolished.

You need to brush up on your history. Maryland had to be occupied during the civil war by federal troops to keep the transportation lines open for federal soldiers traveling to the South. Lincoln suspended the right of habeas corpus, having arrested the leadership of the City of Baltimore and a good chunk of the legislature.
