Teachers: do you trust the families in your school to take COVID seriously?

Teachers really are the most fragile ethereal beings to have ever had employment.

I wonder about the families that are IPL that will snub their noses at the rules, or think because they haven't gotten sick yet they will be fine, or because Suzy follows the science and she knows better. I really really hope my community can all work together and not be selfish, but that isn't what I've seen so far. I am thankful to still be virtual, and I worry for my IPL colleagues, the families, and the little friends in their classes.

Here we have, in the wild, a teacher who believes she knows better than actual researchers. "Foolish mortals, to believe only things that have been scientifically demonstrated!"

They're vaccinated and wearing masks with limited numbers of kids in the classroom. Millions of Americans have been working jobs that require interactions with the public including private school teachers and daycare teachers. Get over it.

That’s the thing...All teachers will NOT be vaccinated. I’ve pre-registered at places that allow that, wake up around 5 a.m. each morning to click and refresh all the open tabs on my laptop to all the possible locations where I am eligible to receive a vaccine, and I still can’t get a damn appointment. It’s a game of luck.

If I was fully vaccinated, I would feel better about being in a classroom with 12 nine year olds. Like previous posters, I have also heard firsthand about all of the travel to different states and countries, sports tournaments, birthday parties, sleepovers, etc. from my students. My husband has multiple underlying health conditions and my family has made very different choices to keep ourselves safe. I can’t say the same for the families of my students.

There is no excuse that if Biden, Hogan and BOE is demanding in person that teachers and all school staff are not put at the head of the line for vaccines. And, families. If kids bring home covid, their families are also impacted.

Have you heard that their parents, friends, or siblings are sick, hospitalized, dead, or dying? If not, and if what you have heard is true, then that should reassure you somewhat.

Children and teens are very germy and don't have a sense of personal space.

PP, do you work in a professional capacity with a room full of kids everyday?

Actually, yes I have. One of my students had Covid. I know of two families where both parents had Covid. One student’s grandmother died from Covid, another student’s uncle died of Covid, and another student’s (local) aunt and grandmother are currently hospitalized with Covid.

Nope. Not at all. Every Monday morning, all of the teachers I work with hear all about the birthday parties, sleepovers and playdates the kids have had over the weekend. One of my students has Covid now and one had it a month or two ago. One or two had it in the spring. Those are just the ones who I know about. I've heard that many parents aren't being tested despite having symptoms. I'm sure many won't submit to any of the testing we've been told will be offered when we return.

Where do you teach?

New poster, teaching virtually. Many of my students and their families have had CoVID. A few parents I know I were hospitalized. Only one death that I heard of.

How do families and teachers re-build mutual trust?

And it seems NO ONE trusts the school administrators.

I feel like this issue is a proxy for a degradation of trust across American society. It's just now playing out in schools, grocery stores, etc.

I don’t. It is nothing personal against our families. I feel the same way about my kids’ two high schools. It’s one reason I’m relieved they are staying in DL.
I agree that no one trusts admin. I’m not sure whether teachers distrust parents right now more than parents distrust teachers but I will say that while parents may not trust teachers to promote their children’s education, teachers don’t trust parents to protect their health. And, while it isn’t the job of parents to worry about whether the teacher gets lung damage or brings the virus home to a chronically ill household member, the disregard feels really blatant and cold. The result is teachers planning their exit.

53% of teachers are vaccinated. 43% of support staff/bus driver's.

Sorry, what? Where are 53% of teachers vaccinated?

I had a parent tell me that everyone would be safe if we just wore gloves. Does that answer your question?

I know more teachers with chronic health issues than other white collar professions. Is it stress? Do people with poor health take refuge in teaching? Not sure if it’s chicken or egg, but I know a lot of medical professionals, lawyers, clergy, and feds. No other group seems to have such bad luck in the health lottery.
