Parents: Oh wow is WTU going to strike?

The WTU announces that they will vote on whether to strike.

Parents: Hmmm is WTU going to strike?

The WTU takes a vote on whether to strike, which does not pass.

Parents: Phew!

Odd teacher on DCUM: SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE? You parents were all just fear-mongering with your discussion of the WTU striking!

Psh, I know right. And yet many parents on this forum were like you evil witch teachers are going to strike!!! No ma'am.

your union **held a vote** on whether to strike. for the life of me I can’t understand how you turn this around to somehow prove something about parents? if you’re mad at the perception that teachers might strike, maybe ... I dunno ... blame the Union that call the strike vote?

No it wasn’t a vote to strike. It was a vote to allow the executive committee to discuss a strike. They were not going to say yes to a strike.

But it still seems like more parents are upset about this than teachers

+1. The “drama” was from the WTU who was asinine enough to hold a vote on the question! Few thought it would happen — it’s just too late in the process - but the idea that the WTU would even suggest it is a problem by itself.

This is because a lot of the teachers OUTSIDE DCUM were saying the opposite, so it's hard to know what is really going on.

Exactly. Our teachers don’t want to go back.

Are you sure you know what that phrase means? There’s no strike, so the fire you’re speaking of is not here.

And this is why you’re stuck with DL until Fall if you’re not already back. Seriously home enrollment rates decline and all the rich public school white people leave. There’s still plenty of rich people who are even more rich to pay taxes. NW schools just won’t get their generous donations lol but they’ll live.

People don't go to the trouble of having a vote to decide whether to have a vote to strike (or whatever) when the people involved are all sensible and there's no chance of striking.

If they were reasonable then they would have appreciated the fact that they've all received full pay for doing less than a full job for a year and they would be grateful about that, not (thinking about having a vote to decide whether to think about) complaining that they want something else.

Are you the union’s lawyer? Didn’t a judge TODAY say the difference between whatever you’re describing and a strike just “semantics”? Spare us.

I don't think it's that. Most teachers want to be in the classroom with students and know that distance learning is useless. The union leadership is bad and wasted all the effort on supporting messaging that most didn't agree with.

Do teachers envision that union leadership will turnover after this fiasco? It really seems, based on this thread at least, that union leadership isn't truly representing the members, which is their job.

It's really not good strategy. As someone else explained beofore, now the union has tipped their hand that they can't pull off a strike, so they've really lost their leverage to argue for anything else. I despise the union but it's also clear that their leadership is pretty lacklustre. I'm now feeling pretty confident in IP Fall.
