No, my child was not selected and this does not change how I feel about YY. Again, we have had a good experience in DL this year. |
PPs seem to be talking about 2 different types of surveys. Yes, there were surveys about DL vs. hybrid. I've never been asked to complete a survey about the quality of instruction, for ELA, math or Mandarin, or school leadership. I'm not moved by the fact that almost all of the other parents are supposedly happy with the Mandarin and ELA teaching situations (um, worst score for white kids in DC) and the head herself. Time to move on whatever happens with hybrid. |
YY parent here. This is 100% accurate which is why we have been so suprised by the response of other YY parents. I can understand if a parent repeatedly selected '100% hybrid/return to school' on every survey and did not get selected for hybrid. However, if a parent repeatedly changed their selections then it is fair. YY administrators can not be expected to read the minds of 400+ families. |
But there was never a clear moment where parents were told "this is your final selection." If you weren't sure about hybrid in October, apparently you were never allowed to become more confident later. |
Ok, but this thread is about the school's hybrid plan and specifically, the surveys related to the hybrid plan. |
Them why do parents feel blindsided? Why do they say there is a lack of transparency? |
| I only remember completing one survey and our responses to survey(s) were not sent to us. Remember what we filled out a month ago let alone 5 months ago? |
See the bolded above. You had a chance to change up to a certain point in time. Also, thinking about this logically, why not answer the surveys to indicate that you wanted hybrid even if you weren't 100% sure? If the school can only accommodate a certain number of kids, and if there's a chance that you might want your kid to return to school at some point in the future, why not answer YES so that school can count your child? |
Not all parents feel this way. For those that do, who knows why they feel that way? Maybe they didn't read all of the emails. Maybe they didn't attend the zoom meetings. Maybe they didn't fill out all of the surveys. It's a lot to stay on top off and I know there are times when I've skimmed an email and missed information. Again, I'm not saying that YY has done everything exactly right, but I also can't explain why parents are confused. |
That's ok you don't have to understand why. But there a lot of parents who feel like this hybrid selection process was not implemented well. |
If either in-person or DL had gone well for us at YY, I wouldn't be too concerned about the hybrid plan this spring. Neither did. Sounds like some of you can't see the forest for the trees. My strong impression is that the lower grades YY parents aren't as easy to dupe as a group as upper grades parents were 5 years ago. Tougher questions are being asked about the way the school runs as time goes on. Hope the trend continues however the hybrid plan shakes out. |
| YY invites for in person learning were based on results of a survey that was sent out in October. That’s why some parents are upset |
|
Typical YY. Admins just pretend to want input from parents, and the Chinese teachers for that matter (in a poor position to argue with much of anything on their 1-year-long renewable visas). They go through the motions and leave things at that. With parents/grandparents/home caregivers who can't read English, they don't even go through the motions.

+1 TBH in October I didn't know DL would be so useless. Otherwise I'm happy to stay. With hybrid at least my kid can socialize a bit with classmates and the school year isn't a total wash. But if DL was better I wouldn't pull my kid. |
WTH does that even mean? You have no clue how the system operates. Are you sure Q isn't going to help you our? |
