No common app essay or recommendations needed. You kid should have an answer in 2-3 weeks. Even if he’s only marginally interested, a yes from somewhere takes the stress level down.

August? Wow! I didn't know schools took applications that early.

Pitt does. And you can submit their application. Put your grades and test scores in by hand. No need for transcripts and recommendations from the schools. It backs up by October. But my last week of August submission kid got a second week of of September acceptance and had a merit aid award by October 1. He really liked the school and it’s a great location. Took a lot of pressure off.

DC also applied to Pitt in early November, received offer 3 weeks later. Pitt and Penn State may be the most prestigious of the schools that use rolling admission: https://www.niche.com/colleges/search/top-rolling-admissions-colleges/

(That is, unless you consider the national football championship important; then apply to 'Bama).

Pitt gave merit aid by late December, $15K annually. Gets the tuition down to instate level.

I don’t know about Pitt bc neither of my kids went there but I live in a suburb of Pittsburgh and anecdotally the city is not known for being a great place for the black community unfortunately. There are many of us who wish that was not the case but change is slow here. I would think the school community would be very welcoming but would talk to students about how they feel in the wider community.

Pitt is awesome - my kid graduated from there last year - but it’s not very diverse. There isn’t a strong Black student presence.

70% white, 10% AA, 6.5% Hispanic.

But, the president is an AA woman, the admin counselor we met with is an AA grad and one of our guides was AA. So I think their diversity score might be trending up.

ha!
That's just putting a few faces in the window - that's not a true reflection of the diversity of the student body.

But if black kids like OP’s child won’t entertain the idea of attending a certain type of college in the first place, how are such colleges realistically supposed to boost those numbers? OP - maybe check a few of these suggested schools out with your son and see what he thinks!

Kid is not getting into UCLA from OOS with mediocre GPA. Also UCLA is heavily Asian and White.

Exactly. UCLA does not have a significant number of AA students. Less than 5%, I believe....

I was thinking U of Rochester, but when I looked at demographics it is not as racially diverse as I thought.
