Fear Monger alert 10 is not the age, it's more like 15+ https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2020/12/we-now-know-how-much-children-spread-coronavirus/ |

More like truth. Happy Reading
https://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2020/07/20/kids-spread-covid-19-study - New Study Shows Kids Over 10 Years Old Spread COVID-19 As Much As Adults Do https://khn.org/morning-breakout/study-kids-10-and-older-spread-covid-as-effectively-as-adults/ - Children younger than 10 transmit to others much less often than adults do, but the risk is not zero. And those between the ages of 10 and 19 can spread the virus at least as well as adults do. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2020/07/coronavirus-infection-spread-in-children-cvd/ - One robust study of nearly 65,000 kids published by the South Korean Center for Disease Control last week showed that children in the 10- to 19-year-old age range could spread COVID-19 within households just as effectively as adults. |
Your own article says: The takeaway is that a critical shift appears somewhere between the ages of 10 and 12. Around the time of puberty, the risk of teenagers both getting and transmitting the virus increases. |
Depends on the state and the particular gym. At my gym (Virginia): - masks are NOT required when working out - masks ARE required when entering, and when walking around - machines are spaced out every other - class sizes are greatly reduced - overall capacity is also reduced - temperature checks are required (not ideal, but still works as a deterrent) - air filtration systems have been improved I've been going to my gym since June and working out without a mask... still covid free. Still negative for antibodies. Still not hearing of positive cases. |

So adults can go to a gym, and take a class, in a room with other people, all unmasked?
If that is allowed, then a kids basketball game unmasked should also be allowed. |
They can, but the difference is people in a gym are spaced out. I think whether gym or indoor kids basketball, people are making calculated choices. Covid is not the only concern - physical health, mental health, etc are also vitally important. And for a low risk kid/person/family, they're weighing the choices and accepting the tradeoff. |
As someone who worked really, really hard as a volunteer during a fall sport to make it happen, please stop complaining about things you aren't participating in. You don't want to let your child play, that's fine! Its a free country! But as pp noted, if adults can work out in an indoor Zumba class together, unmasked, then kids can play unmasked basketball. Period. Its allowed and people can choose to do it. |
These points would only be relevant if adults were required to wear masks while working out indoors at the gym or in an indoor workout class. Since adults are allowed to exercise unmasked, kids are allowed to do it too. It doesn't matter whether 10 or 12 year olds spread more covid. Virginia allows it and this is a voluntary activity. |
But how do you know they’re healthy? And not symptomless positives? I hope the gym is really well ventilated |
This was our calculus, especially with schools closed with no sign of opening. If our kids were IN school, we would not participate. |
You don't know. You are willing to accept the low risk for the guaranteed boost to mental and physical health for your kids. Just like indoor dining, air travel, etc. |

My son is playing in a rec league and my DH is going to coach. They are going to be leaving the school gym doors open for air circulation, taking temperatures at the door, and limiting spectators to one per kid (and none for practices). Kids aren't required to wear masks.
I agree, its risky and I would be happier if our numbers were more like they were this summer but its still worth it for our dc's mental health. He is not doing well with school being closed. |
+1 you’ve got to balance mental and physical health with the risks |
Have you ever watched a basketball game? Do you understand how one plays defense? They're not comparable. |
Let's hope neither your son or DH catch covid and become long haulers or worse |
