Private & Independent Schools
| Me Four. Pre-K applicant. 99+ FSIQ WPPSI and even scores on WPPSI subscales, Strong WPPSI write up. Strong PS teacher feedback..so assuming strong recommendations, good playdates we think (although hard to say what ADs are looking for -- and what our DC does behind those closed doors). No connections, No siblings. MOCO public schools here we come.. |
Just curious, what does this mean? |
| abbe= have |
| b/g = boy girl |
Hi Me Four, this is Me Too here. I expect we will probably see you at MOCO public schools! Good luck to all.
|
| I just think that if DC doesn't get into these schools, then we will move to a nicer house in a nice burb with good schools, plus private university tuition saved up. 13 years of private schools means a cool half-mil $$$. |
| Hey Me Too, Me Four here. Thanks for the best wishes and good luck to you as well. All will be known in ten days or so I guess! |
Did you write a first-choice letter, or did your preschool director indicate to one school that it was your first choice? I was this poster, who was originally asked about the first choice letter. Yes, we did one, and we have a friend on the board who put in a word for us. When we told the director what our first choice was, she said, "Yeah, you and everybody else." They only take about 18 kids to begin with, and they had a big sib pool. It has worked out fine. I am not ata all devastated about that. I think it is telling that the fates or whatever really are in play here since DC got into DC's first choice! Our child is still thrilled with the school where DC was admitted and is attending for the second year. |
| Lucky you that DC got into school of her choice and your second choice. I think we will get in nowhere! |
| Me too. I think we will be closed out. Dc is a great kid but so is everyone elses. |
| Applied only to the Big 3 for PK - knowing the we had a high likelihood of getting shut-out - which I fully expect now. That's ok - saving $27K or so a year is also a nice result. Nonetheless I'm sure I'll still feel indignant when we get the WL/rejection letters. |
| Wow, PP, If it wasn't for the fact that our tuition gets reimbursed by employer, I would not even be considering private schools. $27 K of post tax money for school when the public schools offer great (or at least comparable) quality for free? No way.. |
Yes PP - I have in fact come to the realization late in the process that spending $27k on private PK is insane. Fortunately the forthcoming WL/rejection letters should snuff any lingering temptation I might have - and free up a lot of cash. [Of course if we actually receive an acceptance - I'll likely change my tune quickly]

| Got a question -- if your kids are so wonderful and smart (which I sincerely believe they are) and you aren't chosen simply because you don't have the connections, is it a place that you really want to be? Is the education THAT much better anyway? |
| Good question PP. My issue is that I grew up outside of the US and have very little familiarity with the US public school systems except for the occasional horror story regarding drug use/violence and bullying etc. Noen of this may be relevant in the DC area but I don't have enough information to evaluate this. My interest in private schools comes more from a "play it safe" attitude than anything else. |
