Private & Independent Schools

A word of caution here. With last year, apps were expected to be way down but most privates saw them go up significantly. Never assume.......
We were stunned to hear that our app in a non-entry year was one of well over 100 for only 7 spots. With our child, we took a balanced approach so she knew that it could swing either way. She knew that it was not primarily about her qualifications but simply the sheer numbers applying. |
| Why start out saying your child is an only child and then go on to say she's a twin? Something is fishy here. |
| Like maybe she doesn't want cynical people like 11:41 to figure out who she is? |
| Me too. We applied to 6 schools for my DC who's at a prestigious preschool, scored 99% scores on WPPSI, teacher feedback suggests strong recs + some diversity (not AA) -- and I still get a sinking feeling in my stomach about getting shut out! |
|
Lots of great DCs with fab recs and 99+ WPPSI scores will get shut out or not admitted to DC's/parent's(s') top choice. If you are applying for this year, make sure you have a back-up plan. I've seen folks reel when their DCs are dinged - they had no back-up plans and spent their March scrambling for alternatives. Try to minimize that possibility by thinking through your options now, not next week.
Good luck to everybody. |
| At the same time, very few DCs with 99+ WPPSI scores will get shut out of all schools. So, 20.45 PP, you are certainly not getting shut out of all of the schools that you apply to - and you will probably get into several of your top choices! |

Me three.
DD has 99 WPPSI, great teacher recs, and diversity, but... my sense is that we're looking at public next year, which is our back-up plan. Ugh, I just want to get that rejection letter and move ON. Good luck, everyone! |
Us, a few years ago: Big-name feeder preschool, mid-90s WPPSI, strong teacher feedback, 0 diversity. Got in to 1, waitlisted at 5. Our preschool director told us most families only get in one place. I think it is because the ADs and preschool heads talk, so if the head of school knows that if you get into XYZ school, which is your top one or two or three choice, there is no reason for safety school PDQ to offer you a spot when somebody else really needs it. In our case, we got into our second choice and our kid's first choice. (Our first choice is very small and had very few spots - odds were probably better on the powerball!) It has worked out very well. Going through the process sucks, though. Good luck to all and try to remember to breathe these next couple of weeks! |
| If you live in DC, not too late for most charter and for OOB applications. Know a family shut out last year of 6 privates, but ended up very happy at a DC charter. |
Did you write a first-choice letter, or did your preschool director indicate to one school that it was your first choice? |
I am 20:54. Our DC was very fortunate, but I know folks who were not. There was a DC a year ahead of my DC in preschool. This DC was SHUT OUT from every school. The preschool was stunned. The DC's teacher was devestated. There are factors beyond the control of the DC and family - number of sibs, faculty kids, and legacies in applicant pool. I am not trying to be doomsday here: but we made sure we had back-up plans rather than just trusting that a sweet DC with a 99+ WPPSI, great teacher recs, and fab playdate will triumph. If you read some of the other threads, folks are talking about how schools decide their class compositions. What if you have a DC who is not a sib, faculty kid or legacy? The school, after they consider all those applicants, may be maxed out on your DC's personality type. Maybe they need quiet boys because they've already hit their quota on energetic, etc, etc. Folks should try to be optimistically realistic about the odds here. Again, good luck to everyone. |
I am not the poster, but we did write a FC letter and our PSD did signal to one school that it was our first choice. |
20:45 "me too" poster here. No and No. Should we now or is it too late?
|
|
Op here. We did a first choice letter. But we do not come from prestigious preschool and the psd doesn't know anyone.
Glad to hear that I am not the only one that is nevous and I abbé b/g twins. |
| We are in the same boats, we're applying at an expansion year and my dc has solid grades and (I think) very good teacher recs...however, dc did not perform well on the tests. I am happy with the quality of our local public, but dc isn't happy there. We were hopeful that dc would get into a private, but now that seems very unlikely. |
