Why is devout Mormon snowboarder Torah Bright named Torah?

Anonymous
She's from australia...she probably converted to LDS either when some kid in a clip-on tie knocked on her door in New South Wales or as an adult snowboarding in Utah (she owns a house in SLC). Since she's a mormon she should change her name to something like, Marie and her coach-brother could be Donny.

Ditto for Mary and Joseph, very popular names at our Jewish preschool.

Joseph is a pretty acceptable name for a Jewish boy, definitely widely-used and not in the least bit eyebrow-raising as Jesus or Mary would be.

I suppose you have not been to ski area's often? They are predominantly filled with white people, like hockey.

... you do know that there are lots of white people who do not have blond hair and blue eyes ..

Joseph was one of Jacob's sons - the original 12 tribes of Israel. It is a very common and acceptable jewish name.

I know, I know.

So Joseph is a name that is on the list for Jewish boys and men because, although it has great prominence as the name of the father of Jesus, Joseph is also a figure in the Old Testament. Mary, the mother of Jesus, also ran in the time of the Old Testament (as did Ruth, Sarah, etc). Nobody names their Jewish daughters Mary, but there are plenty of Ruths and Sarahs. What gives?

btw, I like the name Torah Bright.

bbtw, I am white with brown hair and brown eyes.

And here I thought the name of the father of Jesus was God?

Mary is specifically associated with Jesus. And btw, the Hebrew equivalent, Miriam, is still around. Not as popular as Ruth or Sarah, but definitely an "appropriate" name for a Jewish girl.

'Ruth : Sarah : Mary' is to 'Rut : Sarai : Miryam'

Why must a Jewish mom go with Miryam when one never hears of Ruts or Sarais in the US?
