Is this candidate young, too? Most middle aged women would look as if they're semi-angry or tired, due to aging, gravity and wrinkles between their eyebrows (thus "resting btch face").
Yet another reason to get botox.

Sounds like a conversation starter to me “I couldn’t help overhearing you - do you think you would have said the same thing about a male candidate?” Might be an interesting discussion!

To me it sounds more like he's struggling to come up with some reason to hire someone who they all know isn't actually the best candidate but they need to fill the spot with that particular demographic (any woman, a black woman, any minority woman, a young woman) for "diversity" reasons, because lots of managers are now evaluated on the diversity of their teams. So it's kind of like saying, "yeah, she isn't the best candidate, but let's just make something up so we can hire her and I can get my bonus."

I think there's a basis for a seeing (and gently pointing out as one pp suggests) some unconscious sexism there. Do people talk about how male candidates seemed so happy and had such a nice smile in an interview? If anything, it would be worded very differently.

OP here. Agree. There’s definitely sexism. I’m not sure if my husband’s boss, who is a married woman in her 60s, was present. If she was, I bet she “saw” the same.

Baloney. I am a guy, and when we interview guys we definitely talk afterward about whether they appear friendly, outgoing, and easy to get along with. We’re not going to hire someone who is obviously unhappy.

Sure, but that's more something that excludes people, just a box they need to check before skills and experience are considered, not a reason to hire them. -DP
